Every Thursday evening, a few of us met for dinner at the house of a man we called the Time Traveller. He was a brilliant inventor with gray eyes that shone when he talked about his ideas. One evening, after dinner, he showed us a small, beautiful machine made of shining metal and crystal. "This is a model of a machine that can travel through time," he said.
He asked one of us to press a tiny lever. There was a breath of wind, and the little machine became thin and pale like a ghost. Then it was gone. "It has gone into the future," the Time Traveller said calmly. "And in my workshop, I am building a full-sized one." We thought it was a clever trick. None of us really believed him.
The next Thursday, we arrived for dinner, but our host was not there. We began to eat without him. Suddenly the door opened, and the Time Traveller came in. We were shocked. His clothes were dirty and torn, his face was pale, and he was limping. He drank a glass of wine and ate like a starving man. Then he lit his pipe and said, "I will tell you my story. But please do not interrupt me."
"This morning I sat in my Time Machine and pulled the lever," he began. "Night followed day faster and faster, until the sun was a band of fire across the sky. I saw buildings rise and fall like dreams. When I finally stopped, I was in the year 802,701. I was sitting on the grass in a beautiful garden, in front of a huge white stone figure. It was a sphinx with great wings."
"Soon some small, gentle people came to meet me. They were only about four feet tall, with soft, pretty faces and clothes of bright colors. They were called the Eloi. They lived in great old buildings, ate only fruit, and spent their days playing and sleeping in the sun. They were like happy children, but they had no interest in anything. After a few minutes of talking to me, they got bored and wandered away."
"At first I thought I had found a perfect world. There was no hard work, no sickness, and no war. Humans had defeated nature, I thought, and now they could simply enjoy life. But that evening I came back to the sphinx, and my Time Machine was gone! Someone had dragged it into the hollow stone base of the sphinx, behind heavy bronze doors. I could not open them. I was trapped in the future."
"A few days later, I saw some of the Eloi swimming in the river. One little woman was caught by the current and began to drown. The others just watched. I jumped in and pulled her out. Her name was Weena. After that, she followed me everywhere like a little friend, and she brought me flowers. I noticed one strange thing about her. She was terribly afraid of the dark."
"Then I discovered why. Here and there across the land stood deep wells with no water in them. From the bottom came the sound of machines. One night, I saw pale, ape-like creatures with big red eyes moving in the moonlight. These were the Morlocks. They lived underground in the dark, and they came up only at night. Bright light hurt their eyes."
"I decided to go down one of the wells. At the bottom I found dark tunnels full of huge machines, and the Morlocks crowded around me, touching me with their cold hands. I had only a few matches. Each time I lit one, they ran away from the light. I escaped up the well just as my last match went out."
"Slowly, I understood the terrible truth. Long ago, mankind had divided into two races. The rich had become the Eloi, beautiful but weak and foolish. The workers had gone underground and become the Morlocks. The Morlocks still worked the machines and made clothes for the Eloi. But they also came up in the dark to catch the Eloi for food. The Eloi were like animals on a farm."
"Weena and I set out for a huge green building far away. It was an old museum, full of dust. There I found a box of matches, some camphor that burned brightly, and a heavy iron bar to fight with. But on the way back, night came while we were still in a forest. The Morlocks surrounded us in the dark. I lit a fire to keep them away, but the fire spread through the dry trees. In the smoke and confusion, I lost Weena. I never saw her again."
"In the morning, sad and exhausted, I returned to the sphinx. The bronze doors were open! My machine was standing inside. Of course it was a trap. As soon as I stepped in, the doors slammed shut behind me, and the Morlocks came for me in the darkness. But I jumped onto the machine and pulled the lever, and I was gone."
"I did not stop. I traveled millions of years into the future. The sun grew huge and red, and the earth stopped turning. I stood on a cold, gray beach under a dark sky, where giant crab-like creatures crawled slowly over the rocks. Further still, thirty million years from now, there was almost no life at all. Snow was falling, the air was bitterly cold, and the silence was terrible. Feeling sick and afraid, I turned the machine back toward home. And here I am."
We did not know what to say. Nobody believed him. But then he put his hand in his pocket and laid two strange white flowers on the table. They were a kind that none of us had ever seen. "Weena put them in my pocket," he said quietly.
The next day I went back to his house. The Time Traveller was just leaving with a camera and a small bag. "Wait for me," he said. "I'll be back in half an hour. I want to bring back proof." I waited, but he never returned. That was three years ago. Did he travel back into the distant past, or forward to some even stranger future? I do not know. But I still have the two white flowers. They remind me that even when people's minds and strength were gone, gratitude and tenderness still lived in the human heart.
