The King of Denmark had died suddenly. People said that a snake had bitten him while he slept in his garden. Less than two months later, his widow, Queen Gertrude, married his brother Claudius, and Claudius became king.
The dead king's son, young Prince Hamlet, was full of grief. He had loved and admired his father, and he was shocked that his mother could forget him so quickly. While the court celebrated the wedding, Hamlet walked about in black clothes. He no longer took any pleasure in books or in the company of his friends. Even the world itself seemed empty to him.
One night, his loyal friend Horatio came to him with strange news. For two nights, the soldiers who guarded the castle walls had seen a ghost at midnight. It wore armor, and it looked exactly like the dead king. That night, Hamlet went to the walls with Horatio and waited in the bitter cold. At midnight the ghost appeared and called him away to speak with him alone.
"I am your father's spirit," said the ghost. "If you ever loved your father, take revenge for his foul and most unnatural murder." The snake that had killed him, said the ghost, now wore his crown. While he was sleeping in his garden, Claudius had poured poison into his ear. "But do not harm your mother," the ghost added. "Leave her to heaven and to her own heart." Then, as morning came, the ghost faded away.
Hamlet swore to remember. But he was a thoughtful young man, not a man of quick action. What if the ghost was really an evil spirit, sent to trick him into a terrible crime? He decided to act as if he were mad. That way, he could watch the king without being suspected. He made his friends promise never to tell anyone what they had seen.
Hamlet's strange behavior worried everyone. The king's old adviser, Polonius, believed that Hamlet had gone mad because of love. Hamlet loved Polonius's daughter, Ophelia, and she loved him. But her father had ordered her to refuse his letters. Now Hamlet spoke to Ophelia wildly and cruelly. "Get thee to a nunnery," he told her. The poor girl thought that his noble mind was completely destroyed.
Alone, Hamlet thought deeply about life and death. "To be, or not to be, that is the question," he said to himself. Was it better to suffer the troubles of life, or to end them? But no one knew what dreams might come after death, and so people went on living and suffering.
Then a group of traveling actors came to the castle. Hamlet had an idea. He asked them to perform a play in which a man poured poison into the ear of a sleeping king and then won the love of the king's wife. "The play's the thing," he said, "in which I'll catch the conscience of the king."
During the play, Hamlet watched his uncle's face. When the poison was poured into the actor's ear, Claudius jumped up, white with fear. "Give me some light! Away!" he cried, and he rushed from the room. Now Hamlet knew that the ghost had told the truth.
On his way to see his mother, Hamlet passed Claudius, who was kneeling alone in prayer. Hamlet drew his sword. But he stopped. If he killed Claudius while he was praying, perhaps his soul would go to heaven. So Hamlet put his sword away and went on.
In the queen's room, Hamlet spoke to his mother angrily about her marriage. She cried out in fear, and a voice behind a curtain called for help. Thinking it was the king, Hamlet drove his sword through the curtain. But it was old Polonius, who had been hiding there to listen. Hamlet showed his mother two pictures, one of his noble father and one of Claudius, and made her see her own guilt. She wept with shame.
Now Claudius had an excuse to send Hamlet away. He sent him to England with two old school friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, carrying a secret letter. The letter asked the King of England to put Hamlet to death. But Hamlet found the letter on the ship and changed it, so that his two false friends would be killed instead. Then pirates attacked the ship. They took Hamlet prisoner and later set him free in Denmark.
While Hamlet was away, a great sadness fell on Ophelia. Her lover had turned against her, and he had killed her father. Her mind broke. She wandered through the castle, singing strange songs and giving flowers to everyone. One day she climbed a willow tree beside a stream, and a branch broke. She fell into the water and drowned.
Her brother Laertes came home from France, wild with grief and anger. Claudius told him that Hamlet had killed his father and caused his sister's death. Together they made a wicked plan. Laertes would fight Hamlet in a friendly duel with swords. But the point of Laertes's sword would be sharp and covered with poison. And if that failed, the king would give Hamlet a cup of poisoned wine.
Hamlet came back just as Ophelia was being buried. In the graveyard, a gravedigger had shown him the skull of Yorick, the old court jester who had played with him when he was a child. "Alas, poor Yorick!" said Hamlet, thinking how all men end in dust. Then he saw the funeral and learned who was being buried. He leaped into the grave beside Laertes. "I loved Ophelia," he cried. "Forty thousand brothers could not love her as I did!"
The duel was held before the whole court. Hamlet won the first points. The king offered him the poisoned cup, but Hamlet said he would drink later. Then the queen took the cup and drank to her son's success. Laertes wounded Hamlet with the poisoned sword. In the fight, they dropped their swords, and each picked up the other's. Hamlet wounded Laertes with the same deadly point.
Suddenly the queen fell. "The drink, the drink!" she cried. "I am poisoned!" And she died. Laertes, dying, told the truth. "The king is to blame," he said. "Hamlet, you have less than half an hour to live." At last, Hamlet acted. He struck the king with the poisoned sword and made him drink the rest of the poisoned wine. Claudius died.
Laertes and Hamlet forgave each other. Horatio wanted to drink the last of the poison and die with his friend, but Hamlet stopped him. "Live," he said, "and tell my story to the world." Then the prince closed his eyes. "The rest is silence," he whispered. "Good night, sweet prince," said Horatio, weeping. "May flights of angels sing you to your rest." Soon the young Prince of Norway, Fortinbras, arrived with his army, and he ordered that Hamlet be carried away with the honors of a soldier.
