In 1988, a slim woman in simple clothes walked through a dry village in Ethiopia. She knelt down to talk with hungry children and held them in her arms. Years before, she had been one of the most famous movie stars in the world. Her name was Audrey Hepburn. But she had come to Africa for a different reason. She knew how it felt to be a hungry child.
Audrey was born in 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. Her father was British, and her mother came from a noble Dutch family. As a girl, she went to school in England and fell in love with ballet. Her dream was to become a ballerina.
In 1939, World War II began. Audrey's mother took her to the town of Arnhem in the Netherlands. They thought it would be safe there. But in 1940, the German army took over the country, and life became more and more difficult. Audrey kept taking ballet lessons. It is said that she danced in secret performances to collect money for the Dutch resistance, the people who fought against the German army.
The worst time came in the winter of 1944. There was almost no food in the western part of the Netherlands. About twenty thousand people died of hunger during this Hunger Winter. Audrey later said that her family ate tulip bulbs and other plants to survive. She became very thin and sick.
In May 1945, the war ended. Soon after, a United Nations relief group brought food and medicine to the Netherlands. Audrey never forgot the boxes of food that saved her life. This kind of work later continued through UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund.
After the war, Audrey went to London to study ballet. But her teacher told her that she was too tall, and that the war had stopped her serious training for too long. She would never be a top ballerina. It was a painful moment, but Audrey decided to try acting instead. She got small parts in films and shows.
In 1951, a famous French writer saw her and chose her to star in a play on Broadway in New York. Then came the film Roman Holiday in 1953. Audrey played a young princess who escapes from her palace and spends a happy day in Rome with an American reporter. The film was a huge success, and she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. People loved her natural beauty, her elegant style and her warm smile.
She went on to make many more films, such as Breakfast at Tiffany's and My Fair Lady. Her short hair and simple black dresses became famous around the world. But for Audrey, her family was more important than fame. From the late 1960s, she made far fewer films and spent her time raising her two sons.
In 1988, she became a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. For the rest of her life, she traveled to poor and dangerous places, including Ethiopia, Vietnam and Somalia. She used her fame to tell the world about children who needed help. Even when she became sick, she kept working.
Audrey Hepburn died of cancer in January 1993, at the age of sixty-three. She is remembered as a beautiful actress, but also as a person who never forgot the kindness she received as a hungry girl. Her life teaches us that the help we receive can become the help we give.
