Long ago, two men were traveling together across a wide and lonely country. They were very different from each other. The first man always told the truth, even when it was not easy. The second man told lies whenever they helped him. People said he could not tell the truth even if he tried.
One evening, the two travelers lost their way in a thick forest. As they were looking for a place to sleep, they were suddenly surrounded by a large group of apes. The apes grabbed their arms and led them deep into the forest. "Where are they taking us?" whispered the truthful man. "I don't know," said the liar, "but stay calm and let me do the talking."
At last they came to an open space between the trees. There, many apes were standing in two long lines, one on the right and one on the left. At the end of the lines was a large chair made of branches and flowers. On the chair sat the biggest ape of all. He wore a crown of leaves on his head.
This ape had made himself the king of the apes. He had heard that human kings sat on thrones with servants around them, so he had copied everything. Now he wanted to know what humans thought of him.
He waved his hand, and the two travelers were pushed forward. The king looked down at them and said in a deep voice, "Strangers, tell me. What kind of king do I seem to you?"
The liar bowed very low. "Your Majesty," he said, "you seem to me the greatest king in the world. I have traveled to many countries, but I have never seen a king who was more noble or more wise."
The king smiled. "And what do you think of these apes around me?"
"Oh, they are wonderful," said the liar. "Every one of them could be a great general or an important leader. You have chosen your helpers very well."
All the apes were delighted. They clapped their hands and jumped up and down. The king ordered his servants to bring the liar a rich present of fruit, nuts and shining stones.
The truthful man watched all this with surprise. He thought to himself, "If they give such a great reward for a lie, what will they give me for the truth? I have always told the truth, and I will tell it now."
The king turned to him. "And you, stranger. What do you think of me and my friends?"
The truthful man stood up straight and looked the king in the eye. "You are a very fine ape," he said. "And all your friends are very fine apes, too."
For a moment there was complete silence. Then the king's face turned dark with anger. "An ape?" he roared. "You call me an ape? Seize him!"
At once the apes rushed at the truthful man. They bit him, scratched him and pulled his hair. He fought his way through them and ran into the forest, and their angry cries followed him for a long time. When at last he escaped, his clothes were torn and his arms were covered with cuts.
Later, sitting alone under a tree, he thought about what had happened. He did not regret telling the truth. But he had learned something important. "Some people do not want the truth," he said to himself. "They only want to hear what pleases them."
