It was in the Genna era, or perhaps the Kanei era, in the early 1600s. In any case, it was long, long ago.
In those days, believers in the Christian God were already burned alive or killed on crosses as soon as they were found. But perhaps because the persecution was so cruel, the Lord seemed to protect the believers in Japan all the more. In the villages around Nagasaki, angels and saints sometimes visited in the evening light. At the same time, the Devil also came often to the same villages to trouble the believers. Sometimes he came as a stranger, and sometimes as a foreign flower. It is said that the rats that tormented a believer named Yahei in his dark prison were really the Devil in disguise.
In Yamazato village in Urakami, there lived a little girl named Ogin. Her father and mother had wandered all the way from Osaka to Nagasaki. But before they could start a new life, both of them died, leaving Ogin alone. Of course, as strangers from far away, they knew nothing about the Christian God. They believed in Buddhism. According to a French priest, Buddha's teaching was nonsense, and Buddha was a great sinner. But Ogin's parents could not know such "truths." Even now, under the pine trees of a lonely graveyard, they were dreaming of a Buddhist heaven, not knowing that they would fall into hell.
But luckily, Ogin did not share her parents' ignorance. A kind farmer of the village had long ago baptized her and given her the name Maria. He was called Magoshichi, and his Christian name was Joan, a form of John. Ogin did not believe that Buddha, when he was born, had pointed to heaven and earth and roared, "I alone am honored in all the world." Instead, she believed that the gentle Virgin Mary had become a mother by the power of God. She believed that Jesus died on the cross and came back to life three days later. Ogin's heart was not a dry desert like her parents'. It was a rich field of wheat with wild roses blooming in it.
After her parents died, Ogin became Magoshichi's adopted daughter. His wife, Joanna Osumi, was also a kind woman. Ogin lived happily with them, driving the ox and cutting the wheat. As long as the villagers did not notice, they never forgot to fast and pray. Ogin often prayed under the fig tree by the well, looking up at the crescent moon. Her prayer was simple: "Hail, Mother of mercy. We, the exiled children of Eve, cry to you. Turn your gentle eyes to us in this valley of tears. Amen."
Then, one Christmas night, the Devil suddenly came into Magoshichi's house with several officials. A big fire was burning in the hearth. A cross hung on the sooty wall, only for that night. In the cow shed behind the house, a feeding trough was filled with water for the baby Jesus' first bath. The officials nodded to each other and tied up Magoshichi, Osumi and Ogin with rope. But none of the three showed any fear. They were ready to suffer any pain to save their souls. Besides, being caught on Christmas night was surely a sign of God's special love. On the way to the magistrate's house, they kept saying their Christmas prayers in the dark wind.
When the Devil saw them caught, he clapped his hands and laughed. But their courage made him quite angry. When he was alone, he spat and turned into a big millstone. Then he rolled away into the darkness.
The three were thrown into a dark prison dug in the earth, and the officials tortured them in many ways to make them give up their faith. But even the torture of water and fire could not change their minds. Even if their skin burned, they would soon enter the gate of Paradise. Angels and saints often came to comfort them, half in dreams. Ogin was the luckiest of all. She once saw Saint John the Baptist holding out a handful of locusts and telling her to eat. She also saw the angel Gabriel, his white wings folded, giving her water in a beautiful golden cup.
The magistrate knew nothing about the Christian teaching, or about Buddhism either, so he could not understand why they were so stubborn. Sometimes he wondered if all three were mad. When he found that they were not mad, he began to feel that they were some strange creatures, like giant snakes or unicorns. To let such creatures live was against the law, and it was also dangerous for the country. So after about a month, he decided to burn all three. To tell the truth, he hardly thought about whether they were really dangerous. There was the law, and there were the people's morals, so he did not need to think.
On the way to the execution ground at the edge of the village, the three showed no fear. It was a stony empty field next to the graveyard. There their crimes were read out, and they were tied to thick posts: Osumi on the right, Magoshichi in the middle, and Ogin on the left. All of them stood on piles of firewood, and all of their faces were calm.
A large crowd had gathered around the execution ground long before. Beyond the crowd, five or six pine trees in the graveyard spread their branches against the sky like a great canopy.
When everything was ready, an official stepped forward with an important air. He said he would give them a little more time to think. If they gave up their faith now, he would untie them at once. But they did not answer. They only gazed at the distant sky, with smiles on their lips.
The officials and the crowd had never been so quiet. Countless eyes stared at the three faces without blinking. But no one was holding their breath out of pity. Most of the crowd were impatiently waiting for the fire to be lit. And the officials were so bored by the delay that they did not even feel like talking.
Then suddenly everyone heard some very surprising words. "I have decided to give up my faith."
It was Ogin. The crowd broke into an uproar, but then quickly became quiet again, because Magoshichi had turned sadly toward Ogin and spoken in a weak voice. "Ogin! Has the Devil tricked you? If you can bear it a little longer, you will see the face of the Lord!"
Before he finished, Osumi also called out to Ogin desperately. "Ogin! Ogin! The Devil has taken hold of you. Pray! Please pray!"
But Ogin did not answer. Her eyes were fixed on the pine trees of the graveyard beyond the crowd. Soon an official ordered her ropes to be untied. When Magoshichi saw this, he closed his eyes as if he had given up. "Lord, you rule all things. I leave everything in your hands."
When the ropes were off, Ogin stood still for a while as if in a daze. But when she looked at Magoshichi and Osumi, she suddenly knelt before them and cried without a word. Magoshichi kept his eyes shut. Osumi turned her face away and would not look at her.
"Father, Mother, please forgive me," Ogin said at last. "I have given up my faith. It is because I suddenly noticed those pine trees over there, like a canopy. My own father and mother are sleeping in that graveyard under the pines. They never knew the Christian teaching, so surely they have fallen into hell by now. How can I go alone through the gate of Paradise? I will follow my parents down to hell. Please, Father and Mother, go to Jesus and Mary. But now that I have given up my faith, I cannot go on living either..."
After speaking these broken words, Ogin broke down in tears. Now Osumi, too, began to drop tears onto the firewood under her feet. A believer who was about to enter Paradise should not be lost in useless sorrow. Magoshichi looked bitterly at his wife and scolded her in a sharp voice. "Has the Devil caught you, too? If you want to give up your faith, do it by yourself. I will burn to death alone!"
"No, I will go with you. But that is... that is..." Osumi swallowed her tears and then almost shouted, "But it is not because I want to go to Paradise. It is only because I want to be with you!"
Magoshichi was silent for a long time. His face turned pale, then red, and drops of sweat formed on it. In his mind's eye, he was looking at his own soul. He was watching an angel and a devil fighting over it. If Ogin had not lifted her face just then... But Ogin did lift her face. Her eyes, full of tears, shone with a strange light, and she was looking straight at him. In the depths of those eyes was not only the heart of an innocent girl. It was the heart of all human beings, the exiled children of Eve.
"Father! Let us all go to hell: you and Mother, me, and my own father and mother over there. Let the Devil take us all!"
At last, Magoshichi fell away from his faith.
This story has been handed down as the most shameful failure among the many sufferings of Christians in our country. It is said that when the three gave up their faith, even the people in the crowd, who knew nothing about God, all hated them. Perhaps they were angry because they had missed the burning they had come to see. It is also said that the Devil was so happy that he turned into a big book and flew around the execution ground all night. But the author very much doubts that this was such a great success for the Devil.
