One hot summer day, a fox was walking through a field when he saw an old well. He went closer and looked over the edge. Far below, he could see water shining in the dark. The fox leaned over a little more to see better. Then his foot slipped on a wet stone, and he fell all the way down with a splash.
The water was not very deep, so the fox was able to stand up. But when he looked up, his heart sank. The walls of the well were high and smooth. He tried to jump, but he could not reach the top. He tried to climb, but his claws slipped on the stones. Again and again he tried, until he was too tired to try any more.
"I am trapped," he thought. "Unless someone helps me, I will never get out of here."
Some time later, a goat came walking across the field. He had been searching for water all morning, and his throat was dry. When he saw the well, he hurried over and looked down. To his surprise, he saw the fox standing at the bottom.
"Hello, Fox," said the goat. "What are you doing down there? Is the water good?"
The fox thought quickly. He hid his fear and put on a big, happy smile. "Good?" he said. "My friend, it is the best water I have ever tasted! It is so cool and so sweet. I have been drinking it all morning. Why don't you come down and try some? There is plenty for both of us."
The goat was so thirsty that he did not stop to think. Without another word, he jumped down into the well. He landed in the water next to the fox and began to drink and drink.
When at last he lifted his head, the fox said, "Now, there is a small problem. As you can see, the walls are very high. Neither of us can get out alone. But I have a plan that will save us both."
"What is it?" asked the goat, looking up at the sky for the first time.
"Stand up on your back legs," said the fox, "and put your front feet against the wall. Then lower your head. I will run up your back, step on your horns and jump out. After that, I will pull you out too."
The goat thought this was a wonderful plan. He stood up against the wall and lowered his head. The fox ran up his back, stepped on his horns and jumped out of the well. Then, without looking back, he began to walk away across the field.
"Hey! Wait!" shouted the goat. "You promised to help me out! You are breaking your promise!"
The fox stopped, turned around and looked down into the well. "You foolish old goat," he said. "If you had as many brains in your head as you have hairs in your beard, you would never have jumped down before you knew how to get back up. Next time, look before you leap!"
Then the fox ran off and disappeared into the trees.
The goat stood alone in the cold water, looking up at the small circle of blue sky. He was not thirsty any more, but he was very, very sorry. He had to wait until evening, when a farmer came to the well and finally pulled him out with a rope. As he walked home in the moonlight, the goat made a promise to himself. "Next time," he said, "I will look before I leap."
