Once upon a time there was a king who had twelve daughters, each one more beautiful than the last. They all slept in one large room, and every night the king locked the door himself. But every morning, when he opened it, he found that their shoes had been danced to pieces. Nobody could explain it.
So the king made an announcement. Any man who could find out where the princesses danced at night could choose one of them as his wife and become king after him. But anyone who tried for three nights and failed would be severely punished.
Soon a prince came to try. He was given a bed in the room next to the princesses' bedroom, and the door between the rooms was left open. But as he waited, his eyes grew heavy, and he fell asleep. In the morning, all twelve pairs of shoes had holes in them. The same thing happened on the second and third nights. Many others came after him, but all of them failed.
Now a poor soldier, who had been wounded and could no longer serve in the army, was on his way to the king's city. In the forest he met an old woman, who asked him where he was going. "I'm not really sure," he said with a laugh. "Maybe I'll find out where the princesses dance their shoes to pieces, and become king."
"That's not so difficult," said the old woman. "Don't drink the wine that one of the princesses will bring you in the evening. Then pretend to be fast asleep." She gave him a little cloak. "When you wear this, you will be invisible, and you can follow them."
The soldier went to the castle and was welcomed like the others. In the evening the oldest princess brought him a cup of wine. But he had tied a sponge under his chin, and he let the wine run into it without drinking a drop. Then he lay down and soon began to snore loudly.
When the princesses heard him, they laughed. "Another fool," said the oldest. They got up, opened their closets, and put on beautiful dresses. They looked at themselves in the mirror, excited to go dancing. Only the youngest was worried. "I don't know why," she said, "but I feel that something bad is going to happen." "Don't be silly," said the oldest. "You're always afraid."
Then the oldest princess knocked on her bed, and it sank into the floor. Under it were stairs going down. One after another, the princesses went down. The soldier quickly put on his cloak and followed the youngest. Halfway down, he stepped on her dress. "Someone is holding my dress!" she cried. "Don't be foolish," said the oldest. "It just caught on a nail."
At the bottom, they came to a wonderful avenue of trees. All the leaves were made of silver, and they shone brightly. "I need something to prove this," thought the soldier, and he broke off a small branch. The tree made a loud crack. "Did you hear that?" cried the youngest. "It's only our princes shouting for joy," said the oldest.
Next they came to trees with leaves of gold, and then to trees with leaves of shining diamonds. Each time, the soldier broke off a small branch, and each time there was a crack. The youngest trembled with fear, but the oldest only said that the princes were cheering.
At last they came to a big lake. Twelve little boats were waiting there, and in each boat sat a handsome prince. Each princess got into a boat, and the soldier got in with the youngest. "I don't know why," said her prince, "but the boat is much heavier tonight. I have to row with all my strength."
On the other side of the lake stood a beautiful castle full of lights, and cheerful music was coming from it. The princes and princesses went in and danced together. The invisible soldier danced too. Whenever a princess lifted her cup of wine, he drank it before she could. The youngest was frightened again, but the oldest told her to be quiet.
They danced until three o'clock in the morning, when all their shoes were worn through. Then the princes rowed them back across the lake, and the princesses promised to come again the next night. The soldier ran ahead up the stairs and lay down in his bed. When the twelve tired princesses came up, he was snoring loudly. "We are safe," they said. They put their worn-out shoes under their beds and went to sleep.
The soldier said nothing in the morning. He wanted to see the wonderful things again, so he went with them on the second and third nights. Everything happened in the same way. On the third night he took a cup from the castle.
Then he was called before the king, and he brought the three branches and the cup. The twelve princesses stood behind the door and listened. "Where have my daughters danced their shoes to pieces?" asked the king. "In an underground castle, with twelve princes," answered the soldier. He told the whole story and showed the branches and the cup.
The king called his daughters and asked them if it was true. They saw that they could not hide their secret any longer, so they told him everything. Then the king asked the soldier which princess he wanted as his wife. "I am not very young," he said, "so I'll take the oldest." They were married that same day, and the king promised that the soldier would be king after him.
