A soldier came marching along the road: left, right, left, right! He had been at war, and now he was going home. On the road he met an old witch. She was very ugly, and her lip hung down to her chest.
"Good evening, soldier!" she said. "You shall have as much money as you want. Do you see that big tree? It is hollow inside. Climb to the top and go down through the hole. I will tie a rope around you and pull you up when you call."
"What shall I do down there?" asked the soldier. "Get money," said the witch. "You will find three doors. In the first room there is a chest, and on it sits a dog with eyes as big as teacups. Put my apron on the floor, set the dog on it, and take as many copper coins as you like."
"If you want silver, go into the second room. There sits a dog with eyes as big as mill wheels. But if you want gold, go into the third room. The dog there has eyes as big as towers! Just set him on my apron, and he won't hurt you."
"But what will you get, old witch?" "Not a single coin," said the witch. "Just bring me an old tinderbox."
So the soldier climbed down into the tree. Everything was just as the witch had said. He filled his pockets with copper, then threw it away and took silver. Then he went into the third room. The dog there really had eyes as big as towers. "Good evening," said the soldier politely, and he set the dog on the apron. He threw away the silver and filled his pockets, his pack, his cap and even his boots with gold.
"Pull me up!" he called. "Have you got the tinderbox?" asked the witch. "Oh, I forgot it," said the soldier. He went back and got it. When the witch pulled him up, he asked, "What do you want the tinderbox for?" "That's none of your business!" said the witch. "Tell me, or I'll draw my sword," said the soldier. "No!" said the witch. So the soldier drew his sword, and that was the end of the old witch.
He put the tinderbox in his pocket and went to the town with his gold. There he lived at the best inn, wore fine clothes and had many friends.
People told him about the princess of that country. "She is very beautiful," they said, "but she lives in a copper castle with high walls. Nobody can visit her, because someone once said that she would marry a common soldier. The king doesn't like that at all."
The soldier spent money every day and gave a lot to the poor. But at last he had only two coins left. He moved to a tiny room under the roof, and his friends stopped coming. One dark evening he did not even have money for a candle. Then he remembered the tinderbox. He struck it once to make a light, and suddenly the door opened. There stood the dog with eyes as big as teacups. "What does my master want?" it asked.
"Bring me some money," he said, and the dog was gone and back again in a moment with a bag of coins. Now the soldier knew what the tinderbox could do. One strike brought the copper dog, two brought the silver dog, and three brought the gold dog. Soon he was rich again.
One night he thought, "I would really like to see that princess." So he struck the tinderbox, and the dog with eyes as big as teacups ran off. Soon it came back with the sleeping princess on its back. She was so lovely that the soldier kissed her hand. Then the dog carried her home.
The next morning the princess told the king and queen, "I had a strange dream. A dog carried me to a soldier, and he kissed my hand." So the next night an old lady watched by her bed. When the dog came and took the princess, the old lady ran after it and made a cross with chalk on the soldier's door. But the clever dog saw it, and it made crosses on all the doors in the town.
Then the clever queen tied a little bag of grain with a small hole in it to the princess's back. That night, when the dog carried the princess, the grain fell out all the way to the soldier's house. The king's men followed it and put the soldier in prison.
"Tomorrow you will be punished," they told him. And he had left his tinderbox at the inn! A shoemaker's boy ran past his little window. "Hey, boy!" called the soldier. "If you bring me the tinderbox from my room, I'll give you four coins." The boy ran and brought it.
In the square, in front of everyone, the soldier asked to do one last thing. "May I smoke my pipe?" "Yes," said the king. So the soldier struck the tinderbox once, twice, three times, and there stood all three dogs. "Help me!" he cried.
The dogs ran at the judges and the king's men and threw them high into the air. Then the biggest dog took the king and queen and threw them up so high that they never came down again. Then all the people cried, "Little soldier, you shall be our king, and you shall marry the beautiful princess!"
So the soldier rode in the king's coach, and the three dogs danced in front of it. The princess came out of the copper castle and became queen, and she was very happy about that. The wedding party lasted for eight days, and the dogs sat at the table and rolled their great big eyes.
