There was once a rich merchant who had three daughters. The youngest was so lovely that everyone called her Beauty. Her two sisters were proud and lazy. They laughed at Beauty because she liked to stay home and read books.
Then one day the merchant lost his whole fortune. All he had left was a little house in the country. The family moved there and worked hard. Beauty got up at four o'clock every morning to clean the house and cook. Her sisters did nothing all day and only complained.
After a year, the merchant heard that one of his ships had come safely into port. He got ready to go to the city. "Bring us new dresses!" cried the two older sisters. "And what shall I bring you, Beauty?" asked her father. "Please bring me a rose," she said. "None grow here."
But in the city, the merchant found that his ship had brought him nothing. On the way home, he was lost in a forest. Then he saw a light, and he found a great palace. The doors were open, but no one was there. In one room a fire was burning, and a dinner was ready on the table. He ate, and then he found a bed and slept.
In the morning he found new clothes beside the bed. "A kind fairy must live here," he thought. As he walked out through the garden, he saw beautiful roses. He remembered Beauty's wish and picked one. Suddenly there was a terrible noise, and a horrible Beast came toward him.
"You are very ungrateful!" said the Beast. "I saved your life and gave you food and a bed, and you steal my roses, which I love more than anything! You must die for it." The merchant fell on his knees. "Please forgive me. I picked it for one of my daughters." "I will forgive you," said the Beast, "if one of your daughters comes here willingly to die in your place. If not, you must come back in three months."
The merchant went home and told his children everything. The two older sisters said, "Look what Beauty has done with her rose!" But Beauty said, "Father, I will go. I am happy to save your life."
So Beauty and her father went to the palace. The Beast came to them, and Beauty shook with fear. "Did you come willingly?" asked the Beast. "Yes," she said. The next morning her father went home crying, and Beauty was left alone.
But nobody hurt her. Her room was full of books. In one book she read, "Wish anything you like. You are queen here." "I only wish to see my father," she said. At once she saw him in a large mirror. He looked very sad.
Every evening at nine o'clock, the Beast came and talked with her while she had dinner. Little by little, she stopped being afraid of him. He was ugly, but he was kind. Then one evening he asked, "Beauty, will you be my wife?" She was frightened, but she said, "No, Beast." He sighed so loudly that the whole palace shook. "Then good night, Beauty," he said sadly.
Three months passed. Beauty began to like the Beast more and more. But every night he asked the same question, and every night she said no. "I will always be your friend," she said, "but I can't marry you."
One day Beauty saw in the mirror that her father was sick with sorrow. "Please let me visit him," she begged. "I would rather die than make you unhappy," said the Beast. "Go, but come back in a week. When you want to come back, just put your ring on the table before you go to bed. If you don't come back, your poor Beast will die."
The next morning Beauty woke up in her father's house. He was so happy that he got well at once. But her sisters were jealous of her fine dresses and her happy life. "Let's keep her here longer than a week," they said. "Then the Beast will be angry and eat her." So they cried and begged her to stay, and Beauty kindly agreed.
On the tenth night, Beauty had a dream. She saw the Beast lying in the palace garden, almost dead. She woke up crying. "How could I be so cruel to him?" she said. "He is not handsome or clever, but he is good and kind, and that is worth more than anything." She put her ring on the table and went to sleep.
In the morning she was in the palace. She waited for the Beast all day, but at nine o'clock he did not come. She ran into the garden and found him lying by the water. He was not moving. She threw water on his face. He opened his eyes. "You forgot your promise," he said weakly. "Now I can die happy, because I have seen you once more."
"No, dear Beast, you will not die!" cried Beauty. "You will live and be my husband. I thought you were only my friend, but now I know I love you." At that moment the palace was filled with light and music. Beauty turned to the Beast, but he was gone. In his place stood a handsome prince.
"A wicked fairy turned me into a Beast," said the prince. "I had to stay ugly until a good girl agreed to marry me. You have broken the spell." Then a good fairy appeared and brought Beauty's family to the palace. She turned the two jealous sisters into stone statues and put them at the palace gate. "You will stay there until you see your faults," she said. Beauty married the prince, and they lived happily for a long, long time.
