Once a king was hunting in a great forest. He rode so fast after a deer that none of his men could follow him. When evening came, he stopped and looked around, and he saw that he was lost.
Then an old woman came toward him. She was a witch, but the king did not know it. "I can show you the way out," she said, "but only if you marry my daughter." The daughter was beautiful, but her eyes were cold. The king was afraid of being lost in the dark, so he agreed.
The king already had seven children from his first wife, who had died. There were six boys and one girl, and he loved them more than anything. He was worried that the new queen would be unkind to them. So he took them to a small castle that was hidden deep in the forest.
The way to the castle was so hard to find that the king himself could not find it alone. A wise woman had given him a magic ball of thread. When he threw it on the ground, it rolled ahead and showed him the way.
The king went to see his children so often that the queen began to wonder. She paid his servants to tell her the secret, and she stole the ball of thread. Then she sewed six little white shirts, and into each shirt she sewed a wicked spell.
One day, when the king was out hunting, the queen went into the forest. The ball of thread showed her the way. The six boys saw someone coming and ran out happily, because they thought it was their father. The queen threw a shirt over each of them, and at once they became six white swans. They flew away over the trees.
The little girl had stayed in her room, so the queen did not know about her. When the king came the next day, the girl told him what had happened. "I cannot stay here," she said. "I am going to look for my brothers." And that night she ran into the forest.
She walked all night and all the next day. At last she came to a little hut with six small beds in it. She was afraid, so she crept under one of the beds and waited.
When the sun was going down, six swans flew in through the window. They blew on each other, and their feathers fell off. There stood her six brothers! The girl came out, and they all hugged each other with tears of joy.
"We can only be men for a quarter of an hour every evening," said the oldest brother. "Then we turn into swans again. You cannot stay here. This hut belongs to robbers."
"Is there no way to save you?" she asked.
"There is one way, but it is too hard," he said. "For six years you must not speak or laugh. And in that time you must sew six shirts for us from little starflowers. If you say one word, everything will be lost." As he finished speaking, the quarter of an hour was over. The brothers became swans again and flew out of the window.
The girl decided to save her brothers, even if it cost her life. She left the hut, gathered starflowers, climbed a tall tree and began to sew. She did not speak, and she did not laugh. She only sewed.
After some time, the king of that country came hunting in the forest. His men saw the girl in the tree. "Who are you?" they called. She did not answer. They kept asking, so she threw down her gold necklace, then her belt, and then her ring, hoping they would go away. But they climbed the tree and brought her to the king.
The king was surprised by her beauty. He spoke to her kindly, but she said nothing. Still, he could see that she had a good heart, and he loved her. He took her to his palace and married her.
But the king's mother did not like the new queen. "Who knows where this girl who cannot speak has come from?" she said. When the young queen had her first baby, the old woman took it away while the queen was asleep. Then she told the king that the queen was a witch and had done something terrible to the child. The queen could not say a word to defend herself.
The same thing happened with her second child and her third. At last the king could not protect her any more. The judges said that the queen must die.
That day was the last day of the six years. The six shirts were ready, except for one thing. The last shirt had no left sleeve. When the queen was led out, she carried the shirts in her arms.
Just then, six swans came flying through the air. The queen threw the shirts over them, and they became six handsome young men. Only the youngest brother still had a swan's wing in place of his left arm.
Now the queen could speak at last. "Dear husband," she said, "I am not a witch. Your mother has hidden our children." She told him the whole story. The three children were found, safe and well, and the wicked old woman was sent away forever. The king and the queen, with her six brothers, lived together happily for many years.
