A man and his wife had wanted a child for many years, and at last the wife began to hope that God would give them one. From a little window at the back of their house, they could see a beautiful garden full of flowers and vegetables. It had a high wall, and no one dared to go in, because it belonged to a powerful witch.
One day the wife saw a bed of rapunzel, a kind of green salad plant, in the garden. It looked so fresh and green that she wanted it terribly. Every day she wanted it more, and she became pale and thin. "If I can't eat some of that rapunzel, I'll die," she said.
Her husband loved her, so that night he climbed over the wall, quickly picked some rapunzel and brought it to her. She made a salad and ate it hungrily. It tasted so good that the next day she wanted three times as much. So at night he climbed over the wall again. But when he jumped down, the witch was standing in front of him.
"How dare you come into my garden and steal my rapunzel like a thief!" she said angrily. "Please forgive me," he said. "My wife saw it from our window, and she wanted it so much that she thought she would die." The witch's anger became a little less.
"Then take as much as you want," she said. "But you must give me the child your wife will have. I'll care for it like a mother." The man was so afraid that he agreed.
When a baby girl was born, the witch appeared, named her Rapunzel and took her away.
Rapunzel grew into the most beautiful child under the sun. When she was twelve, the witch locked her in a tower in the middle of a forest. The tower had no stairs and no door, only a little window at the very top. When the witch wanted to go in, she stood below and called, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair!"
Rapunzel had long, beautiful hair, as fine as spun gold. When she heard the witch's voice, she tied her braids to a hook by the window and let them fall all the way to the ground. Then the witch climbed up.
A few years later, a king's son was riding through the forest. He heard a lovely voice singing. It was Rapunzel, who passed her lonely days singing. He wanted to go up to her, but he could not find a door. He rode home, but the song had touched his heart so deeply that he came back to the forest every day to listen.
One day, standing behind a tree, he saw the witch come and heard her call, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair!" Rapunzel let down her braids, and the witch climbed up. "So that is the ladder," thought the prince. "I'll try my luck, too."
The next evening he went to the tower and called, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair!" The hair fell down, and he climbed up.
At first Rapunzel was very frightened, because she had never seen a man before. But the prince spoke to her kindly and told her how her song had touched his heart. Then he asked her to marry him. She saw that he was young and kind, and she thought, "He will love me more than the old witch does." So she said yes and put her hand in his.
"I want to go with you," she said, "but I don't know how to get down. Each time you come, bring a piece of silk, and I'll make a ladder. When it's ready, I'll climb down, and you can take me away on your horse." He came every evening, because the witch came during the day.
The witch noticed nothing until one day Rapunzel said without thinking, "Tell me, why is it so much harder to pull you up than the young prince?" "Oh, you wicked child!" cried the witch. "I thought I had kept you away from the whole world, and you have tricked me!" In her anger, she took Rapunzel's beautiful hair and, snip, snap, cut it off. Then she took Rapunzel far away to a lonely desert, where she had to live in sadness.
That evening the witch tied the cut hair to the hook. When the prince called, she let it down, and he climbed up. But instead of his dear Rapunzel, he found the witch, looking at him with angry eyes. "Ha!" she laughed. "Your pretty bird is not in her nest anymore. You'll never see her again!"
The prince was wild with sadness, and he jumped from the tower. He did not die, but he fell into some thorn bushes, and the thorns hurt his eyes so badly that he could not see.
Blind, he wandered through the forest for years, eating only roots and berries and crying for his lost love. At last he came to the desert where Rapunzel lived with the twins she had given birth to, a boy and a girl.
He heard a voice, and it sounded so familiar that he walked toward it. When he came near, Rapunzel knew him at once. She threw her arms around his neck and cried. Two of her tears fell on his eyes, and suddenly they became clear, and he could see again. He took her and the children to his kingdom, where everyone welcomed them with great joy, and they lived happily for a long, long time.
