James Allen grew up in a poor family in England. When he was a teenager, his father went to America to look for work, but he died there soon after arriving, and young James had to leave school and start working. Later, Allen became a writer. His books about the power of thought, especially As a Man Thinketh, are still read around the world. In 1901 he published a book called From Poverty to Power. One of its chapters is about how to get out of a life situation that we do not like.
Allen writes directly to the reader. Perhaps you feel chained by your situation, he says. You want better chances, more space, a better place to live. You may complain about your parents, your boss or your bad luck.
Allen asks you to stop for a moment. The way out, he says, begins inside you. If you are determined to improve your inner life, your outer life will also begin to change.
His first practical piece of advice is this: make the best of what you have now. Do not imagine that you can jump into bigger opportunities while you ignore the smaller ones that you already have. A child at school must master one level before moving on to the next. In the same way, before we can receive something better, we must use well what we already possess.
Allen gives an example. Perhaps you live in a small, poor house and you dream of a better one. Then, he says, make your small house as clean, tidy and pleasant as you can. By making the best of your present surroundings, you will rise above them, and when the time is right, you will be ready to move into better surroundings.
Perhaps you wish that you had more time to study or think, because your working hours are long. Then, Allen says, look carefully at the little free time that you do have. Are you using it well? It is useless to wish for more time if you are already wasting what little you have. With more free time, you would probably only become lazier.
Allen even suggests that hard conditions can be turned into a kind of training. Poverty can teach patience, hope and courage. A lack of time can teach us to act quickly and decide clearly, using every precious moment as it comes. Just as some of the most beautiful flowers grow in rough soil, he says, some of the finest people in history grew up in poverty.
He also talks about people who want to become rich so that they can help others. That is a good wish, Allen says, but check your motive carefully. Sometimes what we really want is to be admired. If you truly want to do good, you do not need to wait for money. You can do it now, today, just where you are. And if you are not doing good with the little you have, more money will probably not make you more generous.
Finally, Allen warns against self-pity. Feeling sorry for yourself, he says, is one of the most harmful habits of all, because it eats away your strength from the inside. Self-pity also keeps us looking backward at what we lack, instead of forward at what we can do. Instead of blaming others, look honestly at your own habits and thoughts, and work on them.
We should read Allen carefully, though. Some of his sentences go too far. He sometimes writes as if all poverty and suffering were caused by a person's own faults. Today we know that many problems, such as poverty, illness or unfair treatment, are not the fault of the people who suffer from them, and that society also needs to change. Allen's message is most helpful when we use it on ourselves, not when we use it to judge other people.
Even so, his practical advice is strong. Use well what you already have. Use the small free time you already have. Do good now, instead of waiting for a perfect future. These steps are within everyone's reach, whatever their situation. Nobody is too poor to be kind, and nobody is too busy to use five minutes well.
Imagine a student who says, "If I lived in a big city with a good language school, I would study English seriously."
Allen would ask some gentle questions. Have you used your textbook fully? Have you read the free English stories that you can find on your phone? Have you used the ten minutes on the bus every morning? Start with these. When a better chance comes, you will be ready for it.
Try this today. Make two short lists. In the first, write three things that you wish you had. In the second, write three things that you already have but are not fully using, such as a book, a skill or a few free minutes. Choose one thing from the second list and use it well today.
