Almost four hundred years ago, in the Puritan town of Boston, a crowd gathered in front of the prison. The Puritans were serious, strict people who believed that sin must be punished in public. On this summer morning, the prison door opened, and a young woman stepped out into the sunlight. Her name was Hester Prynne.
In her arms she held a baby three months old. On the front of her dress was a large letter A, made of fine red cloth and embroidered all around with gold thread. The A meant that she had broken the law of marriage. Hester's husband had sent her to America ahead of him, but he had never arrived. Everyone believed that he had been lost at sea. Yet Hester had had a child.
She was made to stand on the scaffold in the market place for three hours while the whole town stared at her. The old minister, Mr. Wilson, demanded that she tell them the name of the baby's father. Then he asked the young minister, Arthur Dimmesdale, to speak to her. Mr. Dimmesdale was pale and gentle, and the people loved him for his beautiful sermons.
"Hester Prynne," he said, and his voice shook, "if you believe that it is for the good of your soul, speak out the name of your fellow sinner. Do not let him hide. It would be better for him to stand beside you than to hide a guilty heart all his life."
Hester shook her head. "I will not speak," she said. "And my child must seek a heavenly father. She shall never know an earthly one!"
In the crowd stood a small, older man with one shoulder higher than the other. He had just come out of the forest, where he had been a prisoner of Native American people for a long time. When he saw Hester, a terrible look passed over his face. He was her husband. That night, he came to her in the prison, calling himself a doctor. "I will not punish you," he said. "I was wrong to marry a young and beautiful girl. But I will find the man. Do not tell anyone who I am." From then on, he called himself Roger Chillingworth.
Hester was let out of prison, and she lived with her baby in a little cottage at the edge of the town, near the sea. She earned her living with her needle, for her embroidery was the finest in Boston. She gave much of her money to the poor, and she nursed the sick, though they sometimes insulted her. Year after year, she wore the scarlet letter, and it seemed to burn on her breast.
She named her daughter Pearl, because she had paid so much for her. Pearl grew into a beautiful, wild, clever child, full of sudden moods. She seemed to understand the letter better than anyone. Once, some leaders of the town wanted to take Pearl away from Hester. Hester turned to Mr. Dimmesdale. "Speak for me!" she cried. "You know what is in my heart." The young minister spoke so movingly that they let Pearl stay with her mother.
Meanwhile, Mr. Dimmesdale's health was failing. He grew thinner and paler every month, and he often pressed his hand over his heart. Roger Chillingworth became his physician, and soon the two men lived in the same house. The old doctor watched the minister day and night. He began to suspect that a secret sin was eating at the young man's heart. One day, while Dimmesdale was asleep in his chair, Chillingworth opened his shirt and looked at his chest. What he saw there filled him with a wild and terrible joy.
Now Chillingworth knew. Pretending to be a friend, he tortured Dimmesdale's mind with clever questions every day. And Dimmesdale suffered terribly. He was the father of Pearl. He knew that he should confess, but he was too weak and afraid. The more the people praised him, the more he hated himself. One dark night, he climbed onto the scaffold alone, where Hester had once stood. Hester and Pearl, passing by, joined him there and held his hands. A great light crossed the sky, and to Dimmesdale it seemed to draw a huge letter A in the heavens. "Will you stand here with us tomorrow at noon?" Pearl asked. But he would not.
Hester saw how her husband was destroying the minister. Seven years after her punishment, she met Dimmesdale in the forest. There, among the dark trees, she told him the truth. "That old man is my husband," she said. "Forgive me." At first he was angry, but then he forgave her. "We are not the worst sinners in the world," he said. "That old man's revenge has been blacker than our sin."
"Let us go away," Hester said. "There is a ship in the harbor that will sail to Europe. We can begin a new life there, all three of us." She took the scarlet letter off and threw it away, and she let down her beautiful dark hair. For a moment, she was young and happy again. But Pearl, standing across the brook, would not come to her. She pointed at her mother's breast and stamped her foot until Hester picked up the letter and put it on again.
They planned to sail in four days, after Dimmesdale had given the great Election Day sermon. But Chillingworth discovered their plan and arranged to sail on the same ship.
On Election Day, Dimmesdale preached the greatest sermon of his life. The crowd was deeply moved. Then, as the grand procession passed the scaffold, the minister stopped. He called to Hester and Pearl. Leaning on Hester, he climbed up the steps. Chillingworth rushed forward to stop him. "There is no place on earth where you could have escaped me," the old man said, "except this scaffold."
Before the whole town, Dimmesdale confessed. "Look at me," he cried. "I am the man who should have stood here seven years ago!" He tore open his shirt. People later disagreed about what they saw there. Then he sank down onto the scaffold. Pearl kissed him, and her tears fell on his face. "Hester," he whispered, "farewell." And he died.
After that, Chillingworth seemed to wither away like a weed in the sun, for he had nothing left to live for. He died within a year and left all his wealth to Pearl. Hester took Pearl away to Europe. But many years later, Hester came back to her little cottage in Boston, alone, and wore the scarlet letter again by her own choice. She spent the rest of her life helping troubled people, especially women. By then, the letter no longer seemed a mark of shame. Many people said that the A now meant "Able." When she died, she was buried beside Dimmesdale, with one simple gravestone for them both.
