A dictionary seems like one of the most ordinary books in the world. But someone had to decide which words to include, what they mean and how to explain them. Behind every dictionary there are years, sometimes decades, of hard work. The story of the English dictionary is full of determined, unusual and sometimes very funny people.
辞書は、世界でいちばんありふれた本のひとつに思えます。けれども、どの単語をのせるか、その単語がどんな意味か、それをどう説明するかは、だれかが決めなければなりませんでした。どの辞書の裏にも、何年、ときには何十年もの苦労がかくれているのです。英語の辞書の歴史には、意志が強く、一風変わった、ときにはとてもゆかいな人たちが、次々に登場します。
People have made lists of words for thousands of years. In ancient Mesopotamia, scribes wrote lists of words on clay tablets, sometimes in two languages. In medieval England, readers wrote English translations above difficult Latin words in books. These little notes were called glosses, and they are the ancestors of the word "glossary."
人は何千年も前から、単語のリストを作ってきました。古代メソポタミアでは、書記たちが粘土板に単語のリストを書きました。二つの言葉を並べて書いたものもあります。中世のイングランドでは、本を読む人が、難しいラテン語の単語の上に英語の訳を書きこみました。この小さな書きこみは「グロス(注解)」と呼ばれました。これが、glossary(用語集)という単語のもとになっています。
The first dictionary that explained English words in English was published in 1604 by a schoolteacher named Robert Cawdrey. It was called A Table Alphabeticall, and it was very small, with only about 2,500 words. Cawdrey did not try to include every word. He chose only "hard words," most of them borrowed from Latin, French and Greek, which ordinary readers might find difficult. In those days, many readers were not used to looking things up in alphabetical order, so Cawdrey explained how to do it at the beginning of his book.
The most famous early dictionary was written by Samuel Johnson. In 1746, a group of London booksellers asked him to create a complete dictionary of English. Johnson promised to finish in three years. It took him about nine. With the help of six assistants, he defined more than 40,000 words. His great idea was to show how each word was really used, with more than 100,000 quotations from well-known writers. A Dictionary of the English Language was published in 1755, and it remained the most important English dictionary for more than a hundred years.
Johnson's dictionary is also famous for its personality. He defined "lexicographer," a person who writes dictionaries, as "a harmless drudge," meaning a person who quietly does hard, boring work. And he defined "oats" as "a grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people." Johnson enjoyed joking about the Scots, but most of his definitions were careful, clear and wise.
ジョンソンの辞書は、その個性でも知られています。たとえば、辞書を書く人を意味する lexicographer(辞書編纂者)を、ジョンソンは「人畜無害な下働き」と説明しました。つまり、つらく退屈な仕事を黙々とこなす人、という意味です。また、oats(オート麦)は「穀物の一種。イングランドではふつう馬に与えられるが、スコットランドでは人々の食料となっている」と説明しました。ジョンソンはスコットランド人をからかうのが好きだったのです。それでも、説明のほとんどは、ていねいで分かりやすく、的確なものでした。
In America, a teacher named Noah Webster believed that the new country needed its own version of English. In 1828, he published An American Dictionary of the English Language, with about 70,000 words. Webster wanted spelling to be simpler and more logical. Thanks largely to him, Americans write "color" instead of "colour," "center" instead of "centre," and "theater" instead of "theatre." When Japanese students learn the differences between American and British spelling, they are meeting Webster's ideas.
The biggest dictionary project of all began in London in 1857. Members of a society of language scholars decided that the existing dictionaries were not good enough. They wanted a dictionary that would show the complete history of every English word, from its first known use to the present day. This became the Oxford English Dictionary, known as the OED.
辞書づくりの中で最も大がかりな計画が、1857年にロンドンで始まりました。言語学者の学会の会員たちが、今ある辞書では物足りないと考えたのです。彼らがめざしたのは、英語のすべての単語について、知られているかぎり最初に使われたときから現在までの歴史を、すべて示す辞書でした。これが、OED として知られる『オックスフォード英語辞典』になりました。
The plan was enormous. In 1879, a Scottish teacher and scholar named James Murray became the main editor. Murray asked the public for help. Volunteers all over the English-speaking world read old books and wrote down interesting sentences on small slips of paper, each showing a word in use. They mailed the slips to Murray, and millions of them arrived. Murray built a special building in his garden, called the Scriptorium, and filled it with shelves for the slips.
One of the most helpful volunteers was an American named William Chester Minor. Over many years, he sent thousands of excellent slips. For a long time, Murray did not know that Minor was a patient in a hospital for people with serious mental illness, where he had been sent after a tragic crime. Searching for words gave Minor a purpose in his difficult life. Their unusual friendship later became the subject of a popular book.
The work went much more slowly than anyone had expected. The first part, covering words from A to "ant," was published in 1884. Murray died in 1915, while he was still working on the letter T. The full dictionary was not completed until 1928, about seventy years after the project had begun. It filled ten large volumes and explained more than 400,000 words and phrases.
作業は、だれもが予想していたよりも、はるかにゆっくりと進みました。A から ant(アリ)までの単語をおさめた最初の分冊が出たのは、1884年です。マレーは1915年、まだ T の項目に取り組んでいる最中に亡くなりました。辞書全体が完成したのは1928年。計画が始まってから、70年ほどもたっていました。辞書は大きな本10巻になり、40万をこえる単語や言い回しが説明されていました。
Dictionaries for learners have their own story, and part of it happened in Japan. In the 1920s and 1930s, a British teacher named A. S. Hornby taught English in Japan. He noticed that his students needed a different kind of dictionary, one with simple definitions and clear examples showing how words are used in sentences. Working with other teachers, he created a new dictionary for learners, which was published in Tokyo in 1942. After World War II, it was published in Britain by Oxford University Press, and it later became the famous Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary.
Today, dictionaries are changing again. Instead of collecting slips of paper, editors use computers to search huge collections of real texts containing billions of words. These collections, called corpora, show how people actually use the language today and how often each word appears. Most dictionaries are now online, and they are updated regularly. Every year, new words are added from new technology, new science and new ways of living.
A dictionary is not a list of rules sent down from above. It is a record of how real people use their language, carefully collected by people who love words. So the next time you look up a word, remember the teachers, volunteers and editors who spent their lives making it possible.
辞書は、上から押しつけられた決まりのリストではありません。実際の人々が自分たちの言葉をどう使っているかを、言葉を愛する人たちがていねいに集めて記録したものなのです。今度単語を調べるときには、思い出してください。その辞書ができるまでに一生をささげた、先生たちやボランティアたち、そして編集者たちのことを。
