A salt merchant lived in a village in the hills. Every week he took his donkey down to the seashore, where salt was sold cheaply. He filled two big sacks with salt, put them on the donkey's back and walked home again. It was a long, hot journey, and the donkey hated every step of it.
"Why must I carry everything?" the donkey grumbled to himself. "My master walks with nothing on his back but a hat. It is not fair."
On the way home, the road crossed a small river. There was no bridge, so they always walked through the water. One day, as they were crossing, the donkey's foot slipped on a smooth stone. He fell into the river with a great splash, sacks and all.
The merchant shouted and pulled at the rope, and after a moment the donkey stood up again. Water was running out of the sacks. And then the donkey noticed something wonderful. His load was much lighter than before. Most of the salt had dissolved in the river.
The merchant was not pleased. He turned around, went back to the sea and bought even more salt than before, but the donkey hardly cared. All the way home, he was thinking. "So that is the secret," he said to himself. "Salt disappears in water! How lucky I am to have learned that."
When they came to the river again, the donkey walked to exactly the same place. Then he bent his knees and lay down in the water on purpose. He even rolled from side to side to be sure. When he stood up, his sacks were nearly empty. He lifted his head and gave a loud, happy bray. He felt like the cleverest donkey who had ever lived.
But the merchant was not stupid. He had been watching very carefully this time. "I see," he said quietly, rubbing his chin. "So my donkey has become a clever donkey. Well, two can play that game."
The next week, they went down to the seashore as usual. But this time the merchant did not buy salt. He went to a different shop and bought a huge pile of sponges. He filled the sacks with them until they were round and fat. The donkey was surprised, because the load was very light. "Today is my lucky day," he thought.
Still, when they reached the river, he decided to play his trick anyway. Why carry anything at all? He walked to his favorite spot, smiled to himself, and lay down in the water.
This time, something very different happened. The sponges began to drink up the river. They grew heavier, and heavier, and heavier. When the donkey tried to stand up, he could hardly move. The sacks were pressing him down, and water was pouring from them like rain.
With a lot of pushing and pulling, he finally climbed out of the river. Then he had to walk all the way home up the hills with a load that was twice as heavy as the salt had ever been. Every step was harder than the last.
Behind him, the merchant was whistling a happy tune. And the donkey never lay down in the river again.
