One summer, a traveler needed to get to a town on the other side of a wide, dry plain. It was a long way, and he did not want to walk. So he went to a man who rented out donkeys and hired one for the journey. The owner of the donkey came along too, walking beside it to look after it.
They set off early in the morning. At first the air was fresh and cool. But as the hours passed, the sun rose higher and higher, and the day grew hotter than any day that summer. There were no trees on the plain, no houses and not even a large rock. There was nowhere to hide from the burning sun.
By noon, the traveler could not stand the heat any longer. "Stop!" he said. "I must rest for a while, or I will faint." He climbed down from the donkey. Then he looked around for some shade, and he saw that the only shade on the whole plain was the dark shadow of the donkey itself. So he sat down in it, closed his eyes and let out a long sigh of relief.
But the owner of the donkey was just as hot as he was. He looked at the cool shadow, and he frowned. "Excuse me," he said, "but that is my place."
The traveler opened his eyes. "Your place? What do you mean?"
"I mean that this is my donkey," said the owner. "And so it is my donkey's shadow. You rented the donkey, but you did not rent his shadow. Please move."
The traveler sat up angrily. "That is ridiculous!" he said. "I paid good money for this donkey for the whole day. When I rented the donkey, I rented everything that comes with him. That includes his shadow. I am not moving."
"You rented him to carry you," said the owner, "not to give you shade! Get out of my shadow!"
"It is my shadow while I am paying for it!" shouted the traveler.
The shadow was only big enough for one person, and neither man would give up. They argued louder and louder. They waved their arms and pointed their fingers. Soon they stopped using words and started using their fists. They pushed each other, fell over, rolled in the dust and got up again. Each of them was sure that he was right, and each was determined to win.
Meanwhile, the donkey stood quietly and watched them. He was hot and tired, and the two men were making a terrible noise. Nobody was holding his rope. So, after a while, he simply turned around and began to trot away across the plain. Then he began to run. Soon he was only a small gray spot in the distance.
At last the two men stopped fighting. They were covered in dust, their clothes were torn, and they were both completely out of breath. They looked around for the shadow that they had been fighting over.
But there was no shadow. There was no donkey either. There was only the empty plain, the burning sun, and the long, long road ahead.
The two men looked at each other. Then, without a word, they started to walk.
