Early one morning, a young goat wandered away from its farm and into the hills. It was not long before two hungry hunters noticed it. From one side came a lion, and from the other side came a bear. They both jumped at the same moment, and they both landed next to the goat together.
"This goat is mine," roared the lion. "I saw it first."
"You did not!" growled the bear. "I have been following it for an hour. Take your paws off my breakfast."
"Your breakfast?" said the lion. "Do you know who I am? I am the king of the animals, and everything in these hills belongs to me."
"You are not my king," said the bear, and he showed his teeth.
That was the beginning of a terrible fight. The lion jumped on the bear, and the bear threw the lion to the ground. They rolled over and over in the dust, and they bit and scratched and roared until the hills shook. The sun rose higher and higher in the sky, but neither of them would give up. The lion was stronger, but the bear was heavier, and they were both too proud to stop.
Meanwhile, the goat lay quietly between them, too frightened to move. In all the excitement, it had been completely forgotten by both of the great hunters.
Not far away, a fox was sitting behind a rock. He had heard the noise early in the morning and had come to see what was happening. He did not go too close. He walked around the fight once, then twice, then three times, watching carefully and waiting. "Let them fight," he thought. "The longer they fight, the better it is for me."
By the afternoon, the lion and the bear were too tired to lift their heads. Their fur was torn, and they were both covered in scratches. At last they fell down on the ground, one on each side of the goat, and lay there breathing heavily. They could not move a single paw.
This was the moment that the fox had been waiting for. He ran out from behind the rock, as quick as a flash, and went straight between the two great animals. He grabbed the goat and pulled it along behind him. "Thank you, gentlemen," he said politely. "You have worked very hard today, and I will enjoy my dinner very much." And he ran off over the hill.
The lion and the bear watched him go with angry eyes. They wanted to chase him, but they were so tired that they could not even stand up.
"How foolish we have been," said the lion weakly. "We have fought all day and hurt each other badly, and for what? So that a little fox could have a free dinner."
The bear did not answer. He only closed his eyes and groaned. Far away, on the other side of the hill, the fox was already smiling.
