My name is Sota, and I am a first-year high school student. When my baby sister, Hana, was born last year, my father did something that surprised our relatives. He took three months off from his job at a car parts company to stay home and care for her.
"A man taking childcare leave? Will his company be OK with that?" my grandfather asked. My father just smiled and said, "Hana is only a baby once."
My father is not the only one. In Japan, the number of fathers who take childcare leave has grown very quickly. In a government survey published in 2026, 50.9 percent of fathers whose babies were born during the survey period had taken leave. It was the first time that the figure had passed half. In a survey published just two years earlier, it was about 30 percent. For mothers, the latest rate was 88.3 percent.
Why has this changed so fast? One reason is new rules. Since October 2022, fathers have been able to take a special leave of up to four weeks within eight weeks after a baby is born, and they can split it into two parts. Large companies must now make public how many of their male workers take leave. And since April 2025, if both parents take at least fourteen days off soon after a birth, they can receive money equal to 80 percent of their pay for up to 28 days. Because people on leave do not have to pay some taxes and insurance costs, this is close to their usual take-home pay for many workers.
In fact, Japan's system has been generous for many years, at least on paper. In 2019, a UNICEF report compared 41 rich countries and found that Japan offered fathers the longest paid leave of all. The problem was that very few fathers used it. Many men worried that taking leave would hurt their careers or cause trouble for their coworkers.
Sweden is often given as an example. In 1974, it became the first country to replace leave for mothers with paid leave that both parents could share. Today, parents there share 480 days of leave, and 90 of those days are kept for each parent. If a father does not use his 90 days, the family loses them. This rule has encouraged many Swedish fathers to stay home with their babies.
Families who have tried it often talk about the benefits. When fathers take leave, mothers can rest and recover after giving birth, and some can return to work more easily. Fathers learn how to feed, bathe, and comfort the baby, so they feel more confident as parents. My father says that the three months helped him understand how hard my mother's work at home really was.
However, there are still problems. Many fathers take only a few days or a couple of weeks. At small companies, there may be no one to do the work of a person on leave, so coworkers become busier. Some families cannot afford to lose part of their income. Some people also say that leave is not very useful if the father spends the time resting instead of doing housework and caring for the baby.
To solve these problems, some companies give extra money to coworkers who cover for someone on leave, and others plan work so that it can be shared more easily. The government has set a goal of having 85 percent of fathers take childcare leave by 2030.
Now Hana is one year old, and she runs to my father whenever he comes home. "I'm glad I took that time," he says. "It was harder than my job, but it was the best work I've ever done."
What do you think? Some people say that all fathers should take childcare leave, because it helps mothers, builds strong bonds with children, and changes old ideas about who should raise children. Others say that taking leave should be a free choice for each family, because some workplaces are too small to manage without a worker, and some families need their full income.
