There was once a clever thief who had no money at all. One day he arrived at an inn in a small town and asked for a room. "I will stay for a week," he told the innkeeper, a fat, cheerful man with a red face. He did not say how he was going to pay. In fact, he planned to steal something valuable and then run away.
But the thief had no luck. Day after day he looked around the inn, but everything was locked or watched carefully. Soon a week had passed, and the innkeeper began to ask about money. The thief knew that he had to do something quickly.
One evening he saw the innkeeper sitting on a bench outside the front door. He was wearing a beautiful new coat. It was made of thick blue cloth and had shining silver buttons. The innkeeper was clearly very proud of it.
"That is the coat I want," the thief thought. He sat down on the bench beside the innkeeper and began to chat in a friendly way. They talked about the weather, the price of bread and the news from the city. After a while, they ran out of things to say.
Suddenly the thief opened his mouth and gave a huge yawn. At the same time, he let out a long, terrible howl, just like a wolf.
The innkeeper nearly fell off the bench. "Goodness! Why are you howling like that?" he asked.
"I will tell you," said the thief in a low, serious voice. "But first, please hold my clothes for me. If you do not, I will tear them to pieces. You see, sir, I have a strange illness. I do not know when it started. Perhaps it is a punishment for something bad that I did long ago. But this I know for certain. When I yawn three times, I turn into a wolf, and then I attack people."
As he said this, he yawned a second time and howled again, even louder than before.
The innkeeper's red face turned white. He believed every word, and he jumped up from the bench to run away. But the thief caught hold of his new coat.
"Please, sir, wait!" the thief cried. "Hold my clothes, or I will tear them apart in my fury when I become a wolf!"
Then, staring wildly at the innkeeper, he yawned for the third time and gave the most terrible howl of all.
The innkeeper was so frightened that he did not stop to think. He pulled his arms out of the sleeves of his new coat and left it in the thief's hands. Then he ran into the inn as fast as his short legs could carry him. He locked the door behind him and hid under a table.
The thief laughed quietly. He put on the fine blue coat, which fitted him rather well, and walked off down the road into the night. He never came back to the inn, and of course he never paid for his room.
The next morning, the innkeeper opened the door carefully and looked out. There was no wolf, no thief and no coat. There was only an empty bench in the sunshine. Slowly he began to understand what had happened. "A man who turns into a wolf," he said to himself, shaking his head. "How could I have believed such a story?"
