Once an eagle and a fox met on a hillside and became good friends. They enjoyed talking together so much that they decided to live close to each other. "If we are neighbors," said the eagle, "we can help each other and keep each other company."
So the eagle built her nest high in the branches of a tall tree, and the fox made a den in the thick bushes at the bottom of the same tree. Soon both of them had babies. In the eagle's nest there were two little eaglets, and in the fox's den there were three little cubs. Every evening, the two mothers talked to each other while their children played.
But that spring, food was hard to find. One day the eagle flew over the fields for hours and caught nothing. Her eaglets were crying with hunger. As she flew back to the tree, she saw that the fox had gone out hunting. The little cubs were playing alone outside the den.
The eagle looked at the cubs for a long moment. "My own children come first," she told herself. Then she dived down, picked up one of the cubs in her claws and carried it up to her nest.
When the fox came home and found that one of her cubs was gone, she understood at once what had happened. She looked up at the nest and cried out in pain. But there was nothing that she could do. A fox cannot climb a tall tree, and she cannot fly. Her sadness was great, but her anger at being so helpless was even greater. "I trusted you," she called up to the eagle. "You were my friend." The eagle did not answer.
The fox did not leave. Every day she sat at the bottom of the tree and looked up at the nest with sad, angry eyes. She could do nothing, but she waited.
A few weeks later, some villagers were holding a festival in a field near the tree. They had built a fire on a stone altar, and they were cooking meat over it as a gift for the gods. The eagle was flying above, and the smell of the meat made her hungry. She dived down, grabbed a large piece of meat from the altar and flew back to her nest.
But she did not notice that a small, burning piece of wood was stuck to the meat. When she dropped the meat into her nest, the hot piece of wood fell among the dry sticks and grass. A strong wind was blowing that day. In a moment, the little spark became a flame, and the flame became a fire.
The eagle screamed and beat her wings, but she could not put it out. The nest burned, and her two young eaglets, who could not fly yet, fell down to the ground at the bottom of the tree.
There the fox was waiting. She looked at the eaglets, and then she looked up at the eagle.
"Now you know how it feels," she said quietly.
The eagle could only watch from the sky as the fox carried the eaglets away into her den. The tall tree stood empty, and the eagle flew away and never came back. She had broken her promise to a friend, and in the end, she had lost everything she loved.
