Deep in a snowy forest, there lived a satyr. A satyr is a creature from the old Greek stories. He had the body of a man, but the legs of a goat, two small horns on his head and a long, curly beard. Satyrs lived far away from people, and they did not understand human ways very well.
One winter evening, the satyr found a man who was lost in the snow. The man had been walking for hours, and he was shaking with cold. "Poor fellow," said the satyr. "Come with me. My cave is not far away, and there is a warm fire inside."
The man followed him gratefully. The satyr's cave was small but comfortable, and soon the two of them were sitting by the fire. The satyr poured some wine into two cups, and they drank to each other's health. "From tonight," said the satyr, "you and I are friends, and my cave is your cave."
But the man was still very cold. As they talked, he put his fingers up to his mouth and blew on them again and again.
The satyr watched him with interest. "Excuse me," he said. "Why are you blowing on your hands like that?"
"Oh," said the man, "my fingers are so cold that I cannot feel them, so I am blowing on them to warm them up. My breath is warm, you see."
"How interesting," said the satyr. "Your breath is warm. I did not know that."
After a while, the satyr went to the fire and took out a pot of hot soup. He poured it into two bowls and gave one to the man. Steam was rising from the bowl, because the soup was very hot. The man lifted the bowl toward his mouth, and once again he began to blow on it.
The satyr put down his own bowl, and his eyebrows came together. "Why are you blowing on your soup?" he asked slowly.
"Because it is too hot," said the man. "I am blowing on it to cool it down. My breath is cool, you see."
The satyr stood up, and his face was serious now. "Your breath is cool?" he said. "But a few minutes ago, you told me that your breath was warm. With the same mouth, you blow hot, and then you blow cold. How can I trust a creature like that?"
The man tried to explain. "No, no, you don't understand. It is the same breath, but..." But the satyr was not listening. He opened the door of the cave, and the cold wind came in with a cloud of snow.
"I am sorry," said the satyr, "but I cannot be friends with someone who says one thing and then the opposite. You may finish your soup, and you may sleep here tonight, because it is cold outside. But tomorrow morning, you must go."
The man ate his soup in silence. He thought that the satyr was very foolish. But as he lay by the fire that night, he began to think about all the times he had said one thing to one friend and something different to another. And for the first time, he was not so sure who was the foolish one.
