On a quiet morning in spring, a young lamb wandered away from his flock. He had been born only a few weeks before, and everything in the world was new to him. He followed a yellow butterfly across the field, and then another one. When he finally looked up, the other sheep were gone.
At first the lamb was not afraid, because he had never met a dangerous animal before. He found a little stream at the bottom of a hill, and the water was bright and clear. He bent down his head and began to drink. He did not know that a pair of hungry eyes was watching him from the trees.
The eyes belonged to a gray wolf who had not eaten for three days. He was thin, and his stomach was making loud noises. "What luck," he thought. "A fat little lamb, all alone." But this wolf was proud of himself. He liked to think that he was a fair animal, not a common killer.
"I will not simply jump on him," he decided. "First, I will find a good reason. Then nobody can say that I was wrong."
The wolf stepped out of the shadows and walked slowly down to the stream. When the lamb saw him, he froze, and his little legs began to shake.
"You there!" the wolf said in a deep voice. "I know who you are. Last year, you said terrible things about me. You insulted me in front of the whole forest."
The lamb blinked in surprise. "I am very sorry, sir," he said softly, "but that cannot be true. Last year I was not even born. I have only been alive for six weeks."
The wolf had not expected this answer. He cleared his throat and tried again. "Well, then, you have been eating the grass in my field. That field belongs to me, and you are a thief."
"But sir," said the lamb, "I have never eaten grass in my life. I am too young for grass, and my teeth are still very small."
The wolf's ears turned red, because this was more difficult than he had thought. He looked around, and then his eyes fell on the stream. "Aha!" he cried. "You are drinking from my stream. You are making my water dirty, and now I cannot drink it."
The lamb looked at the water, and then he looked at the wolf. "Excuse me, sir, but the water runs from you to me, not from me to you. Besides, I have never really drunk water before today. My mother's milk has always been my food and my drink."
For a moment the forest was so silent that even the birds stopped singing. The lamb had answered everything the wolf said, and every answer was true. A better animal would have felt ashamed. But the wolf only showed his long white teeth.
"You are a very clever little lamb," he said. "You have an answer for everything. But I have an answer too. I am hungry, and I am not going to miss my dinner just because you are good at talking."
Before the lamb could run, the wolf jumped. That evening, the shepherd searched the hills and called again and again, but his lamb never came home. And the wolf, lying in his dark cave, told himself that he had done nothing wrong.
