A fox and a crane lived near each other by a quiet lake. The fox was clever, and he liked to play jokes on others. The crane was a tall, gentle bird with long thin legs and a very long, narrow beak.
One afternoon, the fox met the crane by the water. "Good afternoon, my dear neighbor," he said with a big smile. "We have lived side by side for so long, but we have never had a meal together. Please come to my house for dinner tonight, and I will cook something special for you."
The crane was delighted. "How kind of you," she said. "I would love to come."
That evening, the crane arrived at the fox's house. She was very hungry, and a wonderful smell was coming from the kitchen. "I have made my famous bean soup," said the fox. "I hope you like it." Then he brought out two wide, flat stone plates, which were almost as flat as a table, and poured a little soup on each one.
"Please enjoy it," said the fox, and he began to lick up his soup quickly with his tongue. "Mmm, delicious!"
The crane looked down at her plate. She put the tip of her long beak into the soup and tried to lift some. But the soup was too shallow, and it ran out of her beak before she could swallow anything. She tried again and again. Each time, she got only a tiny drop, and some of the soup splashed onto her white feathers.
The fox watched her and tried not to laugh. "What is the matter?" he asked innocently. "Don't you like my soup, after I worked so hard on it?" Then he leaned over. "Well, if you are not going to eat yours, I will." And he licked up her soup too.
The crane went home hungry that night. She was hurt and angry, but she did not say anything rude. She only said politely, "Thank you for dinner. Next week, you must come to my house."
The next week, the fox came to the crane's house in a very good mood, and he was very hungry. A wonderful smell was coming from the kitchen, which was even better than the smell of his soup. "I have made a fish stew," said the crane. "I hope you like it."
Then she brought out two glass jars, which were very tall and very thin, with long, narrow necks. She poured the stew into them. "Please enjoy it," she said, and she put her long beak down into the jar. She ate slowly and happily. "Mmm, delicious!"
The fox looked at his jar. He could see the pieces of fish inside, and he could smell them. He put his nose into the top of the jar, but it would not go in. He tried to put his tongue in, but it was too short. He even licked the outside of the glass, but of course that did not help at all.
The crane looked up. "What is the matter?" she asked innocently. "Don't you like my stew? I worked so hard on it."
The fox's face became hot. He understood exactly what the crane was doing, and he knew that he had deserved it, so he could not even complain. "Thank you for dinner," he said quietly, and he went home with an empty stomach.
After that night, the fox never played a joke on the crane again.
