Marcus was a middle-aged man who lived in a busy town by the sea. He was kind, and he had a good job, but he was lonely. He had never married, and now his hair was beginning to turn gray. Half of it was still black, and half of it was silver.
"It is time for me to find a wife," he decided one day.
Very soon, Marcus met two women whom he liked very much. The first was Julia, a lively young woman of twenty who laughed at all his jokes. The second was Helena, an elegant woman who was a few years older than Marcus himself. Both of them seemed to like him too. Marcus could not decide between them, so he began to visit them both.
On Mondays and Wednesdays, he had dinner at Julia's house. Julia was lovely, but she had one worry. "Marcus is very nice," she thought, "but I do not want my friends to think that I am marrying an old man." So every evening, while he was telling her about his day, she played with his hair. And whenever she found a gray hair, she quietly pulled it out.
"Ouch," said Marcus. "What was that?" "Oh, nothing," Julia said sweetly. "Just a little insect."
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, he visited Helena. Helena was charming, but she had a worry too. "Marcus is a fine man," she thought, "but he looks younger than I am. People will laugh and say that I have stolen a young husband." So whenever Marcus sat with her in her garden, she gently stroked his head. And whenever she found a black hair, she quietly pulled it out.
"Ouch," said Marcus. "Did something bite me?" "Only a fly, my dear," Helena said with a smile.
Weeks passed, and then months. Marcus was happier than he had been in years. He was loved by two women, and both of them were so gentle with him. He did not notice that his hat was becoming looser and looser. He did not notice that he felt the wind on his head more often. He was too busy to look in the mirror.
Then one morning, as he was getting ready for a dinner party, he finally looked at himself in the mirror. He screamed so loudly that his neighbors came running.
His head was as smooth and shiny as an egg. There was not a single hair left on it, gray or black.
That evening he went to Julia's house. When she saw him, she put her hand over her mouth. "Oh, Marcus," she said, "you look so old!" The next evening he went to Helena's house. She looked at him sadly. "Oh, Marcus," she said, "you look like a baby!"
Marcus walked home alone along the beach. The sea wind was cold on his bald head. "I tried to make both of them happy," he said to himself, "and in the end, I have made neither of them happy. And I have lost all my hair as well."
He bought a warm hat the next day. And when he finally married, many years later, he chose a woman who did not care at all about the color of his hair.
