Once there were two mice who had been friends since they were small. One lived in the country, in a hole under an old hedge at the edge of a field. The other lived in a big house in the town. They did not see each other often, but they had never forgotten their friendship.
One autumn, the Country Mouse invited his friend to visit. He worked hard for days to get ready. He collected the best seeds, some grains of wheat, a few sweet roots and a dried pea. "It is not much," he thought, "but I will share everything I have."
The Town Mouse arrived in a smart little coat. He looked around at the bare fields and the muddy hole, and he tried not to make a face. When dinner was served, he ate a little wheat and a piece of root, but then he put them down.
"My dear friend," he said, "how can you live like this? You work all day like an ant, and this is all you get to eat? In my house there is more food than anyone could eat in a year. Come with me to town, and I will show you a better life."
The Country Mouse looked at his simple dinner. Suddenly it seemed poorer than it had seemed before. "Is it really so wonderful in town?" he asked.
"You will see," said his friend with a smile.
So the next morning they set off together. It was a long journey, and it was dark when they finally reached the big house. They slipped in through a crack in the wall and climbed up into a grand dining room. The Country Mouse had never seen such a room. There were tall candles, soft carpets and a long table that was covered with the remains of a great feast.
"Help yourself," said the Town Mouse proudly. He brought bread, beans, dried figs, honey and raisins. Last of all, he pulled a large piece of yellow cheese out of a basket.
The Country Mouse's eyes grew wide. "This is the most delicious food I have ever tasted," he said. "My life in the country has been so hard. Why did I wait so long to come here?"
But just as he took his first bite of cheese, the door flew open. A servant came in with a lamp. The two mice ran as fast as they could and squeezed into a tiny hole in the wall. It was so narrow that they could hardly breathe. The Country Mouse's heart was beating like a drum.
After a while the servant left, and they crept back to the table. The Country Mouse had just picked up a fig when the door opened again. This time two people came in, laughing and talking, and with them came a big dog. The dog barked and ran straight at the table. The mice ran back to their hole, more frightened than before.
They waited in the dark for a long time. The Country Mouse was hungry, but he was much more afraid than hungry. At last he said quietly, "My friend, thank you for this wonderful feast. But I am going home."
"Going home? But you have hardly eaten anything!" said the Town Mouse.
"That is true," said the Country Mouse. "Your food is richer than mine, but it comes with too much danger. I would rather eat a simple root in peace than a fine cake in fear."
The next morning he walked all the way back to his field. That evening he sat outside his little hole under the hedge. He ate a few seeds and watched the stars come out, one by one. Nobody was chasing him, and no door was going to open. It was the best dinner that he had eaten in days.
