The lion had been king of the forest for many years. In his younger days, he had been the fastest and strongest hunter of all. But now he was old. His legs were stiff, his teeth were loose, and his golden coat had turned gray. The deer and the rabbits ran away from him easily, and most days he went to bed hungry.
"This cannot go on," he said to himself one night. "If I cannot catch my food with my legs, I will have to catch it with my head."
The next morning, he lay down at the back of his cave and began to groan loudly. "Oh, I am so sick," he cried. "I think I am dying." He made sure that a noisy bird heard him. Within an hour, the news had been carried to every corner of the forest.
"The king is very ill," the animals whispered to each other. "He may not live much longer."
The animals were worried. The lion had been a hard king, but he was their king. "We should visit him," said the goat. "It is the polite thing to do." So the goat walked up the hill to the cave and went inside. He did not come out again.
The next day, a sheep visited the lion. Then a young deer came, and after that a calf with a basket of flowers. Each of them went into the cave, and none of them was seen again. Strangely, the lion's groans became weaker and weaker, but his stomach became rounder and rounder.
At last it was the fox's turn. The fox was known as the cleverest animal in the forest, and he had been watching the cave carefully for several days. He walked up the hill and stopped at the entrance, a few steps away from the dark opening.
"Good morning, Your Majesty," he called. "I have heard that you are not well. How are you feeling today?"
A weak voice came from inside. "Ah, my dear fox, I am very, very sick, but I feel a little better now that you have come. Why are you standing out there in the cold? Come in and sit next to me, so that we can talk like old friends."
The fox did not move. "Thank you, Your Majesty," he said politely. "You are very kind. But I think I will stay where I am."
"Why?" asked the lion, and his voice did not sound so weak anymore. "Are you afraid of a poor old sick lion?"
The fox pointed at the ground with his nose. "Not at all," he said. "It is only that I have been studying these footprints. I can see the footprints of a goat, a sheep, a deer and a calf. All of them are going into your cave. But I cannot find a single footprint that is coming out."
There was a long silence. Then an angry roar came from the darkness. But by then the fox was already running down the hill, laughing to himself. He told every animal he met about the footprints, and from that day on, nobody visited the sick lion again.
