A donkey and a fox had become friends, which was a little strange. The donkey was big, slow and simple, and he believed everything that people told him. The fox was small, quick and clever, and he believed nothing at all. But they lived near each other at the edge of the forest, and one day they made an agreement.
"The forest is a dangerous place," said the fox. "There are wolves and bears and worse. Let us go out together and protect each other. If you are ever in trouble, I will help you, and if I am ever in trouble, you will help me."
"That is a wonderful idea," said the donkey. "A friend is the best thing in the world."
So the next morning they set off into the forest together. The donkey was looking for sweet grass, and the fox was looking for mice. They had not gone far when they came around a big rock and stopped. In front of them, lying in the sun, was a huge lion.
The lion lifted his head slowly and looked at them. Then he licked his lips.
The donkey's legs began to shake so much that he could not move. But the fox was already thinking fast. "If we run, the lion will catch one of us," he thought, "and it might be me." He made his decision in less than a second.
"Stay here," he whispered to the donkey. "I will go and talk to him. Leave everything to me."
The fox walked up to the lion and bowed low. "Your Majesty," he said quietly, so that the donkey could not hear, "I can see that you are hungry, and I have an offer for you. That donkey over there would make a fine dinner, and I can help you catch him easily. All I ask is one thing. Promise me that you will not hurt me."
The lion looked at the fox with his golden eyes. "Very well," he said. "Bring me the donkey, and you have my word."
The fox hurried back to the donkey with a big smile. "Good news, my friend!" he said. "I have spoken to the lion, and he has promised not to hurt either of us. But just to be safe, let us walk away quietly. Follow me, because I know a safe path."
The donkey was so happy that he almost cried. "Oh, thank you!" he said. "What a true friend you are!" And he followed the fox along a narrow path between the bushes.
But the fox knew this part of the forest well. Not far away, there was a deep pit which had been dug by hunters and covered with branches and leaves. The fox walked carefully around the edge of it. "Just walk straight ahead," he called back to the donkey. "The ground is nice and soft here."
The donkey walked straight ahead. There was a loud crack, and he fell down into the pit with a crash. The walls were high and steep, and he could not climb out.
The fox ran back to the lion. "There!" he said proudly. "The donkey is trapped in the pit, and he cannot escape. He is all yours, Your Majesty. Now I will be on my way."
The lion stood up and walked slowly to the edge of the pit. He looked down at the donkey, and then he turned and looked at the fox.
"You are right," he said. "The donkey cannot escape. He will still be there tomorrow, and the day after, so there is no hurry." And before the fox could run, the lion caught him with one great paw.
"But you promised!" cried the fox.
"I did," said the lion. "But you have just shown me what a promise is worth. You promised to help your friend too, did you not?"
The fox had no answer. He had learned, too late, that a person who betrays a friend can never expect to be trusted by anyone else.
