One spring, a lion, a fox and a donkey made an agreement. "Let us hunt together," said the lion. "We will be a team, we will help each other, and we will share everything we catch." The fox and the donkey were happy to agree, because it is not every day that a lion asks you to be his partner.
The three of them went into the forest. The donkey made a lot of noise and chased the animals out of the bushes. The fox ran around them and led them in the right direction. And the lion did what lions do best, which was to catch everything that came near him. By evening, they had caught a great pile of food, which was more than enough for all three of them.
They sat down by the pile. "Now," said the lion to the donkey, "you will divide the food for us. Please give each partner his fair share."
The donkey was pleased that he had been chosen for such an important job. He was an honest animal, and he wanted to be fair. Very carefully, he divided the food into three piles. He made sure that each pile was exactly the same size, and he counted everything twice.
Then he stepped back and bowed politely. "There," he said. "Here are three equal shares. Mr. Lion, would you like to choose first?"
The lion looked at the three piles, and then he looked at the donkey. His eyes became narrow, and his tail began to move from side to side.
"Equal?" he roared. "You have given the king of the animals the same share as a fox and a donkey? How dare you!" And before the donkey could say another word, the lion jumped on him. In a moment, the poor donkey was gone.
The fox sat very still. He had not moved a hair, but he had been watching everything.
The lion licked his lips and turned to the fox. "Now, my clever friend," he said in a sweet voice, "perhaps you can divide the food for us."
"Of course, Your Majesty," said the fox, bowing low. "It would be a great honor for a small animal like me."
He went to work at once. He pushed all three piles together into one great heap in front of the lion, and he added every single piece. Then he looked around, picked up one tiny bone and put it aside for himself. "There," he said. "This big pile is for you, Your Majesty, and this little bone is for me. I think that is fair."
The lion was delighted. He smiled widely and patted the fox on the head. "Excellent, that is perfect! Who has taught you to divide things so well, my friend? You are a real expert."
The fox looked at the place where the donkey had been standing a few minutes before.
"I learned it from the donkey, Your Majesty," he said quietly. "I learned it by watching what happened to him."
Then he picked up his little bone and walked home. He was very hungry that night, but he was very much alive.
