Long, long ago, when the world was new, the Good Things and the Bad Things lived together on the earth among human beings. Joy, Peace, Health, Kindness and Hope were some of the Good Things. Sadness, Sickness, Anger, Fear and Hunger were some of the Bad Things.
At first, they shared the world equally. In every house there was a little of each. On some days the Good Things were stronger, and on other days the Bad Things were stronger. People never knew what the next day would bring.
But there was one big problem. The Bad Things were much greater in number than the Good Things. Every year they grew louder and bolder. They pushed the Good Things out of the best places, and they made fun of them. "Go away!" they shouted. "There is no room for you here. The world belongs to us."
The Good Things tried to fight back, but there were too few of them. One by one, they were pushed out of houses, out of towns and finally off the earth itself. Sadly, they flew up into the sky, higher and higher, until they reached the palace of Jupiter, the king of the gods.
They stood in front of his great golden throne. "Great Jupiter," said Peace, who spoke for all of them, "please help us. The Bad Things have driven us away from the earth. We have nothing in common with them, and we can never live with them happily. We are always fighting. Please make a law that will protect us from them forever."
Jupiter listened carefully. He looked down at the earth, and he saw that what they said was true. The Bad Things were running wild everywhere, and people were suffering.
"I will help you," he said at last. "From now on, you Good Things will live here with me in the sky. You will be safe, and the Bad Things will never be able to touch you again."
The Good Things were full of joy. But then Hope spoke quietly. "Great Jupiter," she said, "if we all stay here, what will happen to the people on the earth? They will have only the Bad Things. They will forget that we ever existed."
Jupiter thought for a long time. Then he made a law that has lasted until today.
"The Bad Things," he said, "will stay down on the earth, close to people. They will travel together, in large groups, and they will visit people often. But you Good Things will live up here with me. When it is time, I will send you down to people one at a time. You will not go to everyone in the same way. You will go one by one, and you will visit those who know how to see you."
And that is how things have been ever since. Bad things live near us, and they often come in groups. When one trouble arrives, another soon follows, and then another. But good things come down from the sky, one at a time. They are quieter than the bad things, and they are easy to miss.
So when a good thing comes to you, even a small one, open your eyes and notice it. It has come a long way to find you.
