Long ago, a rich nobleman decided to give a great festival for the people of his city. He opened the theater to everyone for free. He also made an announcement. "I will give a big prize," he said, "to anyone who can show us a new kind of entertainment, something that nobody has ever seen before."
昔、ある金持ちの貴族が、町の人々のために盛大なお祭りを開くことにしました。貴族は劇場を、誰でもただで入れるようにしました。そして、こんなおふれも出しました。「これまで誰も見たことのない、新しい出し物を見せてくれた者には、たっぷりと褒美をとらせよう」
Many performers came to try for the prize. There were singers, dancers and jugglers. Among them was a clown named Felix, who was loved by everyone in the city for his jokes. Felix told people that he had a show which had never been performed on any stage before. The news spread quickly, and on the day of the show, the theater was full. People were even standing at the back and sitting on the steps.
褒美をねらって、たくさんの芸人がやって来ました。歌い手もいれば、踊り手も、曲芸師もいました。その中に、冗談がうまくて町中の人々に愛されている、フェリックスという道化師がいました。フェリックスは、これまでどの舞台でも演じられたことのない出し物があると人々に話していました。うわさはたちまち広まり、出し物の当日、劇場は満員になりました。うしろに立って見る人や、階段に座って見る人までいました。
Felix walked onto the stage alone. He had nothing with him, no music, no helpers and no strange machines. The crowd became completely silent. Everyone was waiting to see what he would do.
フェリックスはひとりで舞台に出てきました。何も持っていません。音楽もなく、助手もなく、変わった仕かけもありません。観客はすっかり静まりかえりました。誰もが、フェリックスが何をするのかと、息をのんで見守っていました。
Suddenly Felix bent his head down toward his chest. From somewhere under his cloak came the squeal of a little pig. It sounded so real that people began to shout. "He has a pig under his cloak! Shake it out! Let us see the pig!"
突然、フェリックスは頭を胸のほうへかがめました。すると、マントの下のどこかから、子ブタのキーキーという鳴き声が聞こえてきたのです。それがあまりに本物そっくりだったので、人々は叫び出しました。「マントの下にブタを隠しているぞ！ 振り落としてみろ！ ブタを見せてくれ！」
Felix smiled and opened his cloak wide. He shook it hard, but there was nothing inside. The crowd was amazed. They stood up, cheered and clapped until their hands hurt. It was the best trick they had ever seen.
フェリックスはにっこりして、マントを大きく広げました。マントを強く振ってみせましたが、中には何も入っていません。観客はびっくり仰天しました。みんな立ち上がって歓声を上げ、手が痛くなるまで拍手しました。それは、人々がそれまでに見た中でいちばん素晴らしい芸でした。
In the crowd sat a farmer from a nearby village. He had watched the show carefully, and he was not as amazed as everyone else. "Is that all?" he said to the man next to him. "I can do that better than he can, and in a much more natural way." Then he stood up and announced in a loud voice that he would perform the same trick the next day.
観客の中に、近くの村から来た農夫がいました。農夫は出し物を注意深く見ていましたが、ほかの人たちほどは驚いていませんでした。「あれだけかい？」と、農夫は隣の男に言いました。「あんなこと、わしならあいつよりうまく、ずっと自然にやれるよ」そして立ち上がると、明日同じ芸をやってみせると大声で宣言しました。
The next day, the theater was even more crowded than before. But most people had not come to enjoy the farmer's show. They loved Felix, and they had come to laugh at the farmer who thought he was better than their hero.
次の日、劇場は前の日よりもっと混み合っていました。けれども、たいていの人は農夫の出し物を楽しむために来たのではありません。人々はフェリックスが大好きだったので、自分たちの英雄より上だと思いこんでいる農夫を笑いものにしに来たのです。
Both performers walked onto the stage. Felix went first. Again he made the sound of a little pig, and again the crowd cheered wildly.
ふたりの芸人が舞台に上がりました。先にやったのはフェリックスです。またしてもフェリックスが子ブタの鳴き声をまねると、またしても観客は熱狂して歓声を上げました。
Then it was the farmer's turn. He bent forward and pretended to hide something under his coat. In fact, he really did have a little pig under there, but nobody knew it. He quietly took hold of the pig's ear and gave it a pull. The pig gave a loud, real squeal.
次は農夫の番でした。農夫は前かがみになって、上着の下に何かを隠しているふりをしました。じつは、上着の下には本物の子ブタがいたのですが、誰もそれを知りません。農夫はこっそり子ブタの耳をつかんで、ぎゅっと引っ張りました。子ブタは本物の大きな鳴き声を上げました。
But the crowd only laughed and booed. "That is not right at all!" they cried. "Felix's pig was much better! Yours sounds nothing like a pig! Get off the stage!" Some people even threw their shoes at him.
ところが観客は、笑ったりやじを飛ばしたりするばかりでした。「ぜんぜんだめだ！」と、人々は叫びました。「フェリックスのブタのほうがずっとよかった！ おまえのはちっともブタらしくないぞ！ 舞台から下りろ！」中には、農夫に靴を投げつける人までいました。
The farmer waited until they had finished shouting. Then he opened his coat and lifted the little pig high above his head for everyone to see. The pig wriggled and squealed again.
農夫は、人々が叫び終わるまで待ちました。それから上着を開いて、みんなに見えるように子ブタを頭の上に高く掲げました。子ブタは身をよじって、また鳴き声を上げました。
The theater went silent. People looked at each other with red faces.
劇場はしんと静まりかえりました。人々は真っ赤な顔をして、たがいに顔を見合わせました。
"Look here," said the farmer calmly. "This is the pig that you said did not sound like a pig. Now you can see what kind of judges you are."
「ごらんなさい」と、農夫は落ち着いて言いました。「これが、あんたたちがブタらしくないと言ったブタですよ。これで、あんたたちがどんな審査員なのか、よくわかったでしょう」
