Long ago in China, there lived a young man named Niulang. His parents died when he was a child, and he lived with his older brother and his brother's wife. They were unkind to him. They gave him the hardest work and the worst food. At last, they said, "You are old enough to live alone. Take this old ox and go." So Niulang left home with nothing but an old ox.
むかし、中国に牛郎（ニウラン）という若者が住んでいました。子どものころに両親が亡くなり、牛郎は兄とその妻と一緒に暮らしていました。兄夫婦は牛郎につらく当たりました。いちばんきつい仕事をさせ、いちばん粗末な食べ物しかあたえませんでした。とうとう二人は言いました。「おまえはもうひとりで暮らせる年だ。この年寄りの牛を連れて出ていけ」 こうして牛郎は、年老いた牛一頭のほかには何も持たずに家を出ました。
Niulang worked hard. He built a small house and planted a field, and the old ox helped him plow it. He took good care of the ox, and they became best friends. Every evening, Niulang talked to the ox about his day. He was never really lonely.
牛郎は懸命に働きました。小さな家を建てて畑を作り、年老いた牛が畑を耕すのを手伝ってくれました。牛郎は牛を大切に世話し、二人はいちばんの友だちになりました。毎晩、牛郎はその日のことを牛に話しました。ですから、本当にさびしいと思うことはありませんでした。
Far above in heaven lived the seven daughters of the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother of the West. The youngest was Zhinu, the Weaver Girl. She was the best weaver in heaven. Every day she wove beautiful clouds of many colors to decorate the sky. But she worked alone, day after day, and she often felt sad.
はるか上の天には、玉皇大帝と西王母の七人の娘たちが住んでいました。末の娘は織女（ジーニュイ）といいました。天でいちばんの機織りの名手でした。毎日、織女は空をかざるために、色とりどりの美しい雲を織っていました。けれども、来る日も来る日もひとりで働いていたので、悲しくなることがよくありました。
One day, the old ox suddenly spoke to Niulang in a human voice. "Tomorrow," said the ox, "seven fairies from heaven will come down to bathe in the lake behind the mountain. The youngest one is kind, but she is lonely, just like you. Go and meet her."
ある日、年老いた牛が突然、人間の声で牛郎に話しかけました。「あした」と、牛は言いました。「天から七人の天女が、山の向こうの湖に水浴びをしに下りてくる。いちばん年下の天女はやさしいが、おまえと同じように、ひとりぼっちでさびしい思いをしている。会いに行ってごらん」
Niulang was very surprised, but he trusted his friend. The next day, he went to the lake and sat under a tree far from the water, with his back to the lake. Just as the ox had said, seven beautiful young women flew down from the sky and began to swim and play in the water. Niulang waited quietly.
牛郎はとてもおどろきましたが、友だちを信じました。次の日、牛郎は湖へ行き、水辺からはなれた木の下に、湖に背を向けてすわりました。牛が言ったとおり、七人の美しい娘たちが空から舞い下りてきて、水の中で泳いだり遊んだりしはじめました。牛郎は静かに待ちました。
When the fairies finished bathing, they put on their robes again. Six of them flew back up to heaven, but the youngest stayed to look at the flowers on the shore. Niulang stood up and politely said hello. "I am sorry to surprise you," he said. "My friend told me about you, and I only wanted to meet you."
天女たちは水浴びを終えると、また羽衣を身につけました。六人は天へ飛んで帰っていきましたが、末の娘は岸辺の花をながめようと残っていました。牛郎は立ち上がり、ていねいにあいさつをしました。「おどろかせてしまってごめんなさい」と、牛郎は言いました。「友だちからあなたのことを聞いて、ただ、あなたに会いたかったのです」
The fairy was Zhinu, the Weaver Girl. She looked at the gentle young man and listened to his story. She liked his honest face. She was tired of her lonely life in heaven, and she agreed to stay on Earth and marry him.
その天女こそ、機織りの娘、織女でした。織女はやさしそうな若者を見つめ、その身の上話に耳をかたむけました。正直そうな顔が気に入りました。天でのひとりぼっちの暮らしに疲れていたこともあって、織女は地上にとどまり、牛郎と結婚することにしました。
Niulang and Zhinu were very happy together. Niulang farmed the fields, and Zhinu wove cloth. Later they had two children, a boy and a girl. Every day was full of love and laughter.
牛郎と織女は一緒になって、とても幸せでした。牛郎は畑を耕し、織女は布を織りました。やがて二人には、男の子と女の子が生まれました。毎日が愛と笑いに満ちていました。
Some years later, the old ox became very old and weak. Before he died, he said to Niulang, "When I am gone, keep my skin. If you are ever in great trouble, put it on, and it will help you." Niulang cried, but he did as his friend said.
何年かたつと、年老いた牛はすっかり年をとって弱ってしまいました。死ぬ前に、牛は牛郎に言いました。「わしがいなくなったら、わしの皮を取っておきなさい。もしひどく困ったことがあったら、それを身につけなさい。きっと助けになるだろう」 牛郎は泣きましたが、友だちの言うとおりにしました。
Up in heaven, the Queen Mother was very angry when she discovered that her daughter had married a human. No one was weaving the colorful clouds, and the sky was gray. She sent soldiers down to Earth. They took Zhinu away from her husband and children and carried her back to the sky.
天の上では、西王母が、娘が人間と結婚したことを知って、ひどく怒りました。色とりどりの雲を織る者がいなくなり、空は灰色になっていたのです。西王母は兵士たちを地上へ送りました。兵士たちは織女を夫と子どもたちから引きはなし、空へ連れもどしてしまいました。
Niulang remembered the words of the ox. He put on the ox's skin and put his two children into two baskets. He hung the baskets on the ends of a long pole and put it on his shoulder. At once, he began to fly up into the sky, chasing after his wife.
牛郎は牛の言葉を思い出しました。牛郎は牛の皮を身につけ、二人の子どもを二つのかごに入れました。そのかごを長い天びん棒の両はしにつるし、肩にかつぎました。するとたちまち、牛郎は妻を追って空へと飛び上がりはじめました。
He came closer and closer. Zhinu saw him coming and reached out her hand. But just then, the Queen Mother took a golden hairpin out of her hair and drew a line across the sky. At once, the line became a wide, rushing river of stars. It was the Silver River, which we call the Milky Way. Niulang was left on one side, and Zhinu on the other. They could see each other, but they could not cross.
牛郎はどんどん近づいていきました。織女は牛郎がやって来るのを見て、手を差しのべました。ところがそのとき、西王母が髪から金のかんざしをぬき取り、空に一本の線を引きました。たちまちその線は、幅が広く、激しく流れる星の川になりました。それが銀河です。わたしたちが天の川とよんでいるものです。牛郎は片方の岸に、織女はもう片方の岸に取り残されました。二人はおたがいの姿は見えても、渡ることはできませんでした。
Niulang and Zhinu cried and cried. Their tears were so sad that all the magpies in the world felt sorry for them. Even the Queen Mother's heart was moved a little. At last, she made a rule. "Once a year," she said, "on the seventh day of the seventh month, you may meet."
牛郎と織女は泣いて泣いて泣きつづけました。二人があまりにも悲しそうに泣くので、世界じゅうのカササギたちが二人をかわいそうに思いました。西王母の心さえ、少し動かされました。とうとう西王母は決まりを作りました。「一年に一度」と、西王母は言いました。「七月七日に、会ってもよい」
So every year, on that night, thousands of magpies fly up into the sky. They join their wings together to make a bridge across the Silver River. Niulang and Zhinu walk across the bridge and meet in the middle, and for one night they are together again.
そこで毎年その夜になると、何千羽ものカササギが空へ飛んでいきます。カササギたちはつばさをつなぎ合わせて、銀河に橋をかけます。牛郎と織女はその橋を渡ってまん中で出会い、ひと晩だけ、また一緒に過ごすのです。
You can see them in the summer sky. The bright star Vega, on one side of the Milky Way, is the Weaver Girl. The star Altair, on the other side, is the Cowherd, with two small stars beside him, their children. In China, this day is called the Qixi Festival. In Japan, it is called Tanabata. People say that if it rains on that night, it is the tears of the two lovers.
夏の夜空に、二人の姿を見ることができます。天の川の片側にある明るい星ベガが織女です。反対側にある星アルタイルが牛郎で、そのそばにある二つの小さな星は、二人の子どもたちです。中国ではこの日を七夕節（チーシー）とよびます。日本では七夕とよばれています。その夜に雨が降ったら、それは恋人どうしの二人の涙なのだといわれています。
