"The body is the servant of the mind." With these words, James Allen begins the third chapter of As a Man Thinketh. He believed that our bodies follow our thoughts. Just as our thoughts shape our character and our lives, they also shape our health and even our faces.
Allen believed that worry and fear are especially harmful. He wrote that people who live in fear of illness are often the people who become ill. Anxiety, he said, quickly weakens the whole body. On the other hand, strong, clean and happy thoughts help the body to grow strong and graceful.
Allen lived more than one hundred years ago, and some of his ideas go further than modern doctors would. Happy thoughts cannot cure every sickness, and when we are sick, we should see a doctor. But today, scientists agree with part of his message. Long periods of stress and worry really can make it harder for the body to stay healthy, while rest, laughter and good friends help it.
Allen also said that changing your food will not help much if you do not change your thoughts. When a person's thoughts become clean, he no longer wants unhealthy food. Clean thoughts make clean habits. As he puts it, if you want to protect your body, guard your mind.
One of the most interesting parts of this chapter is about faces. Allen said that a sour face does not come by chance. It is made by sour thoughts. Anger, pride and selfish thoughts slowly draw lines on our faces. Kind and cheerful thoughts draw different lines.
He gives an example from his own life. He knew a woman who was ninety-six years old, but she had the bright, innocent face of a young girl. He also knew a man who was not even middle-aged, but whose face was tight and unhappy. The woman had a sweet and sunny nature. The man was full of anger and discontent. Their faces showed the thoughts they had lived with for many years.
Allen used another picture. You cannot have a fresh and healthy house unless you open the windows and let in the air and sunshine. In the same way, you cannot have a strong body and a bright face unless you open your mind to thoughts of joy, goodwill and peace.
He also wrote about growing old. On the faces of old people, he said, some lines are made by kindness, some by strong and clean thinking, and some by anger. Anyone can see the difference. For people who have lived well, old age is calm and gentle, like the setting sun.
The chapter ends with this idea. There is no doctor like a cheerful thought for driving away the troubles of the body, and there is no comfort like goodwill for driving away sadness. To live every day with thoughts of anger, suspicion and envy is to live in a prison that we have built ourselves. But to think well of everyone, to be cheerful with everyone, and to look patiently for the good in everyone is the door to a happy life.
Try this today. Look in the mirror and smile, even if you do not feel like it. Then, when you meet people, try to find one good thing about each of them. Notice how your body feels at the end of the day. A cheerful mind may be the cheapest medicine in the world.
