About 2,500 years ago in China, there lived a teacher named Confucius. He was not a king or a rich man. For many years, he traveled from country to country, looking for a ruler who would listen to his ideas. Few rulers did. But his students wrote down what he said, and their book, The Analects, has been read for more than two thousand years in China and for many centuries in Korea and Japan.
The book begins with these words: "Is it not a joy to learn something and then practice it again and again?" For Confucius, learning was not a hard duty. It was one of the great pleasures of life. When you first learn a new English word, it belongs to the book. When you use it again and again, it becomes yours.
In the same opening passage, he also said, "Is it not delightful when friends come from far away?" and "Is he not a truly good person who does not get angry when others do not notice him?" Learning, friendship, and a calm heart: these three things are at the start of the whole book.
Confucius also said, "Learning without thinking is useless. Thinking without learning is dangerous." If you only read and memorize, the knowledge stays outside you. But if you only think by yourself, without learning from others, you may go far in the wrong direction. We need both.
Here is another famous saying: "When you know something, say that you know it. When you don't know something, say that you don't know it. That is true knowledge." This is not easy. We want to look smart, so we pretend. But only people who can say "I don't know" are able to start learning.
Confucius believed that we can learn from everyone. "When I walk with two other people, I can always find a teacher. I follow their good points. When I see their bad points, I look for the same faults in myself and correct them." A classmate who studies hard teaches us something. A classmate who is rude teaches us something, too.
What about mistakes? Confucius said, "To make a mistake and not change it: this is the real mistake." Everyone makes mistakes, even very wise people. What matters is what we do next.
One day, a student asked him, "Is there one word that can guide us for our whole life?" Confucius answered, "Perhaps it is 'consideration.' What you do not want others to do to you, do not do to others." People in many parts of the world have taught almost the same rule. Confucius taught it about five hundred years before the time of Jesus.
He also said, "If you review the old and find something new in it, you can be a teacher of others." In Japan, this idea is known as a four-character phrase, "onko chishin." When you read a story for the second time, you often notice something you missed the first time. That is this saying in action.
Near the end of his life, Confucius looked back and described his life in a few short lines. "At fifteen, I set my heart on learning. At thirty, I stood firm. At forty, I had no more doubts. At fifty, I knew what Heaven wanted from me. At sixty, I could listen to anything calmly. At seventy, I could follow my heart's wishes without doing wrong." In Japanese, these ages still have special names that come from this saying. For example, forty is sometimes called "fuwaku," the age of no doubts.
Confucius was not perfect, and he often failed. But he never stopped learning, and he never stopped enjoying it. Perhaps that is why his last lesson for us here is about joy. "Those who know something are not as good as those who love it. And those who love it are not as good as those who enjoy it." The same is true of reading in English. Don't just study it. Enjoy it.
