Every time you plug something into a wall socket, you are using an idea developed by Nikola Tesla. The electricity in most homes around the world is alternating current, or AC, and Tesla was one of the people who made it possible. Yet when he died in 1943, he was living alone in a hotel room in New York, with little money. Who was this brilliant and mysterious inventor?
Tesla was born in 1856 in Smiljan, a village in what is now Croatia. His parents were Serbian. His father was a priest, and his mother, although she had never gone to school, invented useful tools for the home and could remember long poems. Tesla believed that he got his talent for invention from her. According to a family story, he was born at midnight during a lightning storm.
As a child, Tesla had an unusual ability. He could see detailed pictures in his mind, so clearly that they seemed real. Later, he used this ability to design machines. He said that he could build an invention completely in his head, run it and even check which parts wore out, all before making a real one.
Tesla studied engineering at a college in Graz, Austria. There, he saw a machine that ran on direct current, or DC, in which electricity flows in only one direction. It made a lot of sparks. Tesla thought that there must be a better way. Years later, in 1882, while he was walking in a park in Budapest, he suddenly saw the answer in his mind: a motor that worked with alternating current, in which electricity changes direction many times a second. According to his own account, he drew the design in the sand with a stick.
In 1884, Tesla sailed to New York. It is said that he arrived with only a few cents in his pocket. He went to work for Thomas Edison, the most famous inventor in America. But the two men were very different. Edison found answers by trying thousands of experiments, while Tesla liked to work things out with mathematics and in his imagination. Edison also strongly supported DC power. Tesla later said that Edison promised him a large bonus for improving his machines, but then told him that it had been a joke. After only about six months, Tesla quit.
Tesla started his own company, but it failed. For a time, he had to dig ditches to earn money. Then, in 1888, he received patents for his AC motor and system. A businessman named George Westinghouse saw their value and bought the rights to use them. Now Tesla and Westinghouse were on one side, and Edison was on the other. This competition became known as the war of the currents.
Edison warned that AC was dangerous. But AC had a big advantage. It could carry electricity over long distances much more cheaply. In 1893, Westinghouse lit up the Chicago World's Fair with AC, using a huge number of electric lights. Visitors were amazed. Then, in 1896, a power plant at Niagara Falls began sending AC electricity to the city of Buffalo, about forty kilometers away. AC had won, and it soon spread around the world.
There is a famous story that when Westinghouse's company was in money trouble, Tesla tore up a contract that would have made him extremely rich, in order to help his friend. Historians are not sure about the details, but it is clear that Tesla never became as wealthy as his inventions could have made him.
Tesla kept inventing. He created the Tesla coil, a machine that can make very high voltages and produce spectacular sparks like small lightning bolts. He worked on wireless communication and radio, and in 1898 he showed a model boat that could be controlled by radio. Many people give the credit for radio to the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi, but in 1943, a decision by the United States Supreme Court recognized the importance of Tesla's earlier work.
His biggest dream was to send electricity and messages through the air, without wires, to anywhere in the world. Around 1901, with money from the banker J. P. Morgan, he began building a tall tower on Long Island, New York. But the money ran out, Morgan stopped supporting the project, and the tower was never completed. It was torn down in 1917. This was a terrible disappointment for Tesla.
In his later years, Tesla lived in a series of hotels in New York. He spent much of his time feeding pigeons in the park and caring for injured birds in his room. He sometimes told reporters about amazing inventions, such as a ray that could stop armies, but he never showed that they worked. Some people saw him as a genius. Others saw him as a strange old man. He died alone on January 7, 1943, at the age of eighty-six.
For many years after his death, Tesla was almost forgotten. Today, however, he is famous again. A unit for measuring the strength of magnetic fields is called the tesla, and a well-known electric car company is named after him. His life shows both the power of imagination and the importance of turning ideas into things that others can use. Tesla saw the future in his mind, and because of him, our world is full of light.
