Long ago, in the middle of a great, dark forest, there was an old castle. An old woman lived there alone, and she was a witch. In the daytime she turned herself into a cat or an owl, but at night she became a woman again.
If a young man came within a hundred steps of her castle, he could not move. He had to stand still like a stone until she let him go. If a young girl came near, the witch turned her into a bird and shut her in a cage. She had seven thousand of these cages in her castle.
There was once a girl called Jorinda. She was more beautiful than any other girl. She and a young man called Joringel were going to be married. They loved each other very much.
One evening they went for a walk in the forest. "Be careful," said Joringel. "Don't go too near the castle." The evening sun was shining through the trees, and a dove was singing sadly in an old tree. But soon they began to feel sad, too. Jorinda began to cry, and Joringel felt afraid. They looked around and saw that they were lost.
The sun was going down. Through the bushes Joringel saw the old walls of the castle, very near them. He was terribly frightened. Jorinda was singing a sad little song. Suddenly she stopped. Joringel turned around. Jorinda had become a nightingale!
An owl with burning eyes flew around them three times and cried, "Hoo, hoo, hoo." Joringel could not move or speak. He stood there like a stone.
When the sun went down, the owl flew into a bush, and an old woman came out. She was thin and bent, with red eyes and a long nose. She caught the nightingale in her hand and carried it away. Joringel could do nothing.
At last the old woman came back and said some strange words, and Joringel could move again. He begged her to give back his Jorinda, but she said no and went away.
Joringel called and cried, but it was no use. He went away to a strange village and worked there as a shepherd for a long time. He often walked around the castle, but never too near.
One night he dreamed about a blood-red flower with a beautiful big pearl in the middle. In his dream he picked the flower and went to the castle. Everything he touched with it became free from magic, and he found his Jorinda again.
When he woke up, he began to look for the flower. He looked over hills and valleys for eight days. On the ninth day, early in the morning, he found it. It was blood-red, and in the middle there was a big drop of dew, as beautiful as a pearl.
He carried the flower to the castle. When he came within a hundred steps, he could still move. He touched the gate with the flower, and it opened. He followed the sound of the birds and found the room. The witch was there, feeding the birds in their seven thousand cages.
When she saw Joringel, she was very angry. She shouted at him, but she could not come near him. There were hundreds of nightingales in the cages. How could he find his Jorinda?
Then he saw the old woman quietly take one cage and walk toward the door. He ran to her and touched the cage with the flower, and he touched the old woman too. Now she could not use her magic any more. And there stood Jorinda, as beautiful as before! She put her arms around his neck. Then Joringel turned all the other birds back into girls. He and Jorinda went home together, and they lived happily for a long time.
