On Christmas morning, a little Boy found a toy rabbit in his stocking. The Rabbit was made of soft velveteen, with long ears and a pink nose. The Boy played with him for a little while. Then other presents came, and the Rabbit was forgotten.
For a long time, the Rabbit lived in the toy cupboard. The expensive toys looked down on him. Only the old Skin Horse was kind to him. He was so old that most of his hair was gone.
"What is Real?" the Rabbit asked one day. "Is it having a motor inside you?" "No," said the Skin Horse. "Nobody can make you Real in a factory. A child makes you Real. If a child loves you and loves you for years, and always keeps you close, you slowly become Real."
"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit. "Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, because he always told the truth. "Your fur gets thin, your eyes get loose, and you look old. But when you are Real, you don't mind. People who love you never think you are ugly."
One night, the Boy could not find his toy dog. "Here, take this old rabbit," said Nana, and she put the Rabbit in his bed. From then on, the Boy took the Rabbit everywhere. The Rabbit's fur got thin, and his pink nose lost its color, but he was very happy.
One evening, the Boy left the Rabbit out in the garden. When Nana brought him in, she said, "It's only a toy." "No!" said the Boy. "He isn't a toy. He's REAL!" The Rabbit was so happy that he could not sleep that night.
In summer, the Rabbit met two wild rabbits near the woods. They could jump and dance. "Come and dance with us," they said. But the Rabbit could not jump, because his back legs were just one soft piece. "You aren't a real rabbit!" they laughed, and they ran away. "I am Real," said the Rabbit sadly. "The Boy said so."
Then the Boy got very sick with a fever. For many days, the Rabbit stayed close to him under the blanket. At last the Boy got better. "He will go to the seaside to rest," said the doctor. "And all his old toys must be burned, because of the sickness." Then he looked at the Rabbit. "Especially that dirty old rabbit."
So the Rabbit was put into a sack and left at the bottom of the garden. In the morning, the gardener was going to burn it all. The Boy was so excited about the seaside that he did not think of the Rabbit.
The Rabbit lay in the cold sack. He thought of the long summer days with the Boy. "Why did I become Real, if this is the end?" he thought. Then something wet ran down his old velvet nose. For the first time in his life, he was crying a real tear.
Where the tear fell, a beautiful flower grew out of the ground. The flower opened, and out stepped a fairy. "I take care of toys that children have loved," she said. "The Boy loved you, so you were Real to him. Now you will be a real rabbit, and everyone will see it."
She kissed him and carried him to the woods. There, his body changed. He had soft brown fur, shining eyes and strong back legs. He jumped and danced with the wild rabbits. He was a real rabbit at last!
Next spring, the Boy was playing in the garden. A rabbit looked at him from the trees. "He looks just like my old Bunny," thought the Boy. He never knew it, but it really was his old friend. The Rabbit came back to see the child who first loved him.
