Today, people around the world eat instant noodles. You just add hot water, wait a few minutes, and your meal is ready. But who had this idea? It was a Japanese man named Momofuku Ando.
Ando was born in 1910 in Taiwan, and later he started businesses in Osaka. After World War II, Japan did not have enough food. One cold night, Ando saw a long line of people. They were waiting in the cold to buy a bowl of ramen at a street stand. Ando later said that he never forgot this scene. He wanted to make a new kind of ramen. Anyone could eat it at home, quickly and easily.
But he did not start right away. In 1957, his business failed, and he lost almost everything. Still, he did not give up. He built a small shed behind his house in Ikeda, Osaka, and began to work on his ramen idea. He worked there alone every day, from early in the morning until late at night, for about one year.
The hardest problem was this. He had to dry the noodles, so they could stay good for a long time. Then the noodles had to become soft again in hot water. How could he do it? He tried many ways, but they did not work. One day, he was watching his wife cook tempura. When food goes into hot oil, the water inside comes out and leaves many tiny holes. "That's it!" he thought.
He put the noodles into hot oil. The noodles became dry, with many tiny holes. When he added hot water, the water went into the holes, and the noodles became soft again. In 1958, when he was forty-eight years old, he started selling Chicken Ramen. It was the world's first instant ramen, and it was a big hit.
Ando did not stop there. In 1966, he visited America. He saw people there break his noodles into paper cups and eat them with forks, because they did not have ramen bowls. This gave him a new idea. In 1971, he started selling Cup Noodles. These noodles came in their own cup, so people could eat them anywhere.
His dream went even higher. His company made a special kind of ramen for space, and in 2005 a Japanese astronaut ate it on a space shuttle. Ando was ninety-five years old then. He died in 2007. Today, you can visit museums about him in Osaka and Yokohama, and you can even make your own cup of noodles there.
His story shows that a great idea can start late in life, in a small shed, with just one person who does not give up.
