If you look at an old thousand-yen bill, you will see the face of a Japanese man. His name is Noguchi Hideyo. He was a doctor and a scientist. He studied germs and the illnesses they cause. His life was full of hard times, but he never stopped working.
Noguchi was born in 1876 into a poor farming family in Fukushima, near Lake Inawashiro. When he was a baby, he fell into the fireplace in his house and badly burned his left hand. His fingers stuck together, and he could not use the hand well. At school, other children sometimes laughed at him. But his mother, Shika, worked very hard so he could study, and he studied very hard, too.
When he was a teenager, a doctor did an operation on his hand. After it, he could move his fingers a little. He was so thankful that he decided to become a doctor himself. At the age of twenty, he passed the national test to become a doctor.
In 1900, he went to America with very little money. Later, he worked at a famous research institute in New York. He worked from early in the morning until late at night, looking at germs under a microscope.
His most famous work was about a germ that causes a serious illness. This illness can slowly hurt the brain. Noguchi found the germ in the brains of sick people. This showed doctors the true cause of their problem, and he became famous around the world.
His mother sent him a letter and asked him to come home. In 1915, he came back to Japan for a short time and saw her again. They traveled together, and she was very happy. It was his last visit to Japan.
Later, Noguchi went to Africa to study yellow fever, a terrible illness. Not all of his ideas about yellow fever were right. Today we know that a virus causes it. A virus is much smaller than the germs he saw in his microscope. In 1928, in what is now Ghana, Noguchi got yellow fever himself, and he died there. He was fifty-one years old.
Noguchi made mistakes, like all scientists. But his hard work and his strong will moved many people. Today, his old house in Fukushima is part of a museum, and the fireplace is still there.
