Long ago, a young fisherman named Urashima Taro lived in a small village by the sea. He lived with his old mother, and he was kind to everyone.
One evening, when he was walking home along the beach, he saw some children. They were laughing and hitting a small turtle with sticks. The poor turtle was trying to get back to the sea.
"Stop that!" said Taro. "A turtle is a living thing, too. Here, take this money and let him go." The children took the coins and ran away. Taro carried the turtle to the water. "Be careful," he said. "Go home now."
A few days later, Taro was fishing in his boat. Suddenly he heard a voice. "Taro-san! Taro-san!" It was the turtle. "Thank you for saving me. The princess of the sea wants to thank you, too. Please get on my back. I will take you to Ryugu-jo, the Dragon Palace under the sea."
Taro climbed onto the turtle's back. Down, down, down they went into the blue water. Taro was surprised because he could breathe easily. Colorful fish swam past him, and soon he saw a beautiful palace made of red coral and white pearls.
The princess, Otohime, was waiting at the gate. She was the most beautiful woman in the world. "Welcome, Taro," she said with a smile. "You were kind to our turtle. Please stay with us and enjoy yourself."
Every day was like a festival. The food was delicious, and all of it was new to Taro. Red sea bream and flatfish danced for him to soft music. Taro was so happy that he forgot about time.
But after three days, he remembered his mother. "I must go home," he said. "My mother is waiting for me." Otohime looked sad. She gave him a shiny black box tied with a red string. "This is a tamatebako, a treasure box," she said. "Take it with you. But you must never, never open it."
The turtle took Taro back to the beach. But something was strange. The trees were different. The houses were different. He did not know anyone, and no one knew him. His own house was gone.
He asked an old woman, "Do you know Urashima Taro?" She thought for a moment. "Urashima Taro? There is an old story about a fisherman with that name. He went out to sea three hundred years ago and never came back."
Taro sat down on the sand. He felt very sad and lonely. He did not know what to do. He looked at the box in his hands. "Maybe the answer is inside," he thought. He untied the red string and opened the lid.
White smoke came out of the box. It went around and around Taro. His black hair turned white. His face became full of lines. His back became bent. In a moment, he was a very old man.
The three days at the Dragon Palace were really three hundred years. On the quiet beach, the waves came and went, just like before.
