Hana is a high school student in Japan. She rides her bike to school every day. One day, her English teacher showed the class a photo of a busy street. There were many bikes on it, but only a few cars. "This is Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark," the teacher said. "In this city, many people go everywhere by bike."
Copenhagen is famous as a city of bicycles. There are more bikes than people in the city. In 2020, about four in ten trips to work or school in the city were made by bike. People ride in suits and dresses. Some parents carry their children in a big box at the front of the bike.
Why do so many people ride bikes there? Riding there is safe and easy. The city has wide bike lanes. Many of them are separated from the cars by a curb. Some traffic lights are timed for bikes, so riders can go through many green lights in a row. There are also long bike roads called cycle superhighways that connect the city to nearby towns.
Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, is another famous bike city. People often say that there are more bikes than people in Amsterdam. In Utrecht, another Dutch city, a giant bike parking place opened near the main station in 2019. It has space for 12,500 bikes, and the city calls it the largest in the world.
But these cities were not always like this. In the 1970s, the streets of the Netherlands were full of cars. Many children were killed in traffic accidents. People were very sad and angry. They marched in the streets and asked for safer roads. Little by little, the cities built more bike lanes and safer streets.
Bikes have many good points. They do not give off carbon dioxide, so they are good for the environment. They are quiet, and they need much less space than cars. Riding a bike is also good exercise. When more people ride bikes, there are fewer traffic jams.
However, not every city can easily become a bike city. Some cities have many hills. Some have very hot summers or a lot of snow. Some people live far from their schools or offices. Also, building new bike lanes costs a lot of money, and many roads in Japan are narrow.
In Japan, many people ride their bikes on the sidewalk. This can be dangerous for people who are walking. In April 2026, Japan started a "blue ticket" system for bike riders aged sixteen or older. The police often give riders a warning first. But riders who break traffic rules in a dangerous way can get a blue ticket, and then they have to pay money.
Hana thought about her own town. The road to her school is narrow, and cars pass very close to her. "I want a safe bike lane in my town, too," she thought.
What do you think? Some people say that Japanese cities should build more bike lanes, because bikes are good for our health and the environment. Others say that cities should make trains and buses better instead, because many places in Japan are too hilly or too far for bikes, and the roads are narrow.
