At a junior high school in Japan, the students in Ms. Mori's class were talking about their future jobs. When it was Kaito's turn, he said, "I want to be a nurse."
A few students laughed. "A nurse? That's a job for women," one boy said. Kaito's face turned red.
Then it was Mei's turn. "I want to be an airline pilot," she said. "Really? I've never seen a woman pilot," said another student. Mei smiled, but she felt a little uncomfortable.
Ms. Mori stopped the class. "Let's think about this," she said. "Why do we think that some jobs are for men and some jobs are for women?"
She explained that ideas about jobs change over time. In Japan, the word for nurse was once different for women and men. In 2002, the country started to use one word for all nurses. A few years before that, in 1999, the name for nursery school teachers also changed to a word that does not show gender. In English, too, many people now say "flight attendant" instead of "stewardess," and "police officer" instead of "policeman."
But the numbers still show big differences. In 2018, fewer than one in ten nurses in Japan were men. Around the world, only about five percent of airline pilots were women in 2021. Many people say that these numbers are not only about what people like. Sometimes children stop dreaming about a job because they never see someone like them doing it.
Ms. Mori told the class about her cousin, a man who works as a nurse at a children's hospital. "Some families were surprised at first," she said. "But now they say he is gentle and strong, and he can lift children easily. Good nurses need kindness, knowledge, and energy. Being a man or a woman is not important."
She also talked about pilots. "A pilot needs to stay calm, make quick decisions, and work well with a team. Women can do all of these things, of course. Today, some airlines in Japan and other countries are working to hire more women pilots."
Not everyone agrees on what to do. Some people think that schools and companies should encourage students to try jobs that are unusual for their gender, for example with special events and programs. Other people say that everyone should just be free to choose, and that we should not push anyone into a job. They think that differences in the numbers are not a problem if people choose freely.
After class, the boy who laughed at Kaito came to him. "Sorry," he said. "My grandmother was in the hospital last year, and a nurse who was a man helped her a lot. I forgot about that."
Kaito smiled. "It's OK. Maybe you can be a nurse, too," he said, and they both laughed.
What do you think? Some people say that schools should encourage students to try jobs that are unusual for their gender, because it can open new dreams for them. Others say that students should simply choose the jobs they like, because pushing people in any direction is not fair.
