In Japan, most junior high and high school students wear school uniforms. Uniforms are common in the United Kingdom and many Asian countries, too. But in the United States and Canada, most students wear their own clothes to school. Which is better? People have different ideas about this question.
Uniforms have many good points. First, students do not need to think about what to wear every morning. Second, all students look the same, so it is hard to see who is rich and who is poor. Third, many students feel proud of their school when they wear its uniform. On a school trip, it is also easy for teachers to find their students in a crowd.
But uniforms also have problems. A full set of uniforms can be expensive, and it often costs tens of thousands of yen. Some uniforms are too hot in summer and too cold in winter. Some students also say that uniforms stop them from showing who they are.
In recent years, many schools have changed their uniforms. In the past, most schools had skirts for girls and pants for boys. Now, more and more schools let students choose. A girl can wear pants if she wants, and a student can choose a necktie or a ribbon. This helps students who do not feel comfortable with the old style. And pants are warmer in winter, too!
Some schools have changed their rules in other ways. Some let students wear sweaters or jackets of any color. A few schools have stopped having uniforms at all. At some schools, students talked with their teachers and decided the new rules together.
Clothes may look like a small thing. But they are connected to big ideas, like freedom, fairness, money, and being part of a group.
What do you think? Some people say uniforms are good, because they are easy, fair, and help students feel part of their school. Others say students should be free to choose their own clothes, because then they can show who they are and feel comfortable.
