One morning, Kenta saw a colorful round badge on his teacher's jacket. It looked like a small wheel with many different colors. "What is that?" he asked. "It's an SDGs badge," Mr. Ito said. "Do you know what the SDGs are?" Kenta did not know, so he decided to find out.
SDGs stands for Sustainable Development Goals. The word "sustainable" means that something can continue for a long time without hurting people or the earth. In 2015, all the member countries of the United Nations agreed on these goals. They hope to reach them by 2030.
There are seventeen goals, and each one has its own color. For example, Goal 1 is to end poverty, and Goal 2 is to end hunger. Goal 4 is good education for everyone, and Goal 5 is gender equality, which means equal chances for women and men. Goal 13 is about climate change, and Goal 14 is about life in the sea.
Each goal also has smaller targets, and there are 169 targets in total. For example, one target says that all girls and boys should be able to finish primary and secondary school for free.
The SDGs were not the first goals of this kind. From 2000 to 2015, the United Nations had eight goals called the MDGs. They were mainly for poorer countries. The SDGs are different, because they are for every country, rich or poor. Their most important promise is to "leave no one behind."
Japan has work to do, too. For example, in 2026, a world report on gender equality put Japan in 117th place out of 145 countries. There are still only a few women leaders in politics and business in Japan. Japan also throws away a lot of food that people could still eat.
In Japan, the SDGs have become very popular. Many companies use the SDGs in their advertising, and many towns have their own SDGs plans. At school, students often study the goals and think about what they can do.
However, not everyone is happy about this. Some people say that companies use the colorful badge only to look good, without really changing what they do. Others say that seventeen goals are too many and too big. And the United Nations itself says that the world is moving much too slowly to reach the goals by 2030.
Still, many people believe that the SDGs are useful. They give people around the world a common language to talk about big problems. They also show how problems are connected. For example, when girls can go to school, their families often become less poor, and their children are often healthier.
Kenta thought for a long time. Then he chose something small to start with. He decided to finish his school lunch every day and to bring his own water bottle to school. "It's a small step," he said to Mr. Ito, "but it's my step."
What do you think? Some people say that the SDGs are very important, because they help everyone in the world work together for a better future. Others say that the SDGs are not very useful, because many people and companies just talk about them and do not really change anything.
