It was terribly cold. Snow was falling, and it was getting dark. It was the last evening of the year, New Year's Eve. In the cold and the dark, a poor little girl was walking through the streets. She had no hat, and her feet were bare.
She had slippers when she left home, but they were her mother's and much too big. She lost them when she ran across the street to get away from two fast carriages. So she walked on with her little feet red and blue with cold.
In her old apron she carried many matches. No one had bought any matches from her all day. No one had given her a single coin. She was hungry and cold, and snow fell on her long yellow hair.
Lights shone in all the windows, and there was a smell of roast goose in the street. The girl sat down in a corner between two houses. She did not want to go home, because she had not sold any matches. And it was cold at home, too. The wind blew through the holes in the roof.
Her hands were almost frozen. "Maybe one match would help," she thought. She took one out and struck it on the wall. Scratch!
It burned with a warm, bright flame, like a little candle. Suddenly she seemed to be sitting in front of a big iron stove. The fire was so warm! But then the flame went out. The stove was gone, and she held only the burnt match in her hand.
She struck another. Where the light fell on the wall, she could see into a room. A table was covered with a white cloth and fine plates, and there was a roast goose, steaming hot. But then the match went out, and there was only the cold, thick wall.
She struck another match. Now she was sitting under a beautiful Christmas tree. Thousands of candles were burning on its green branches. She reached up her hands, and the match went out.
The candles rose higher and higher, and she saw that they were the stars in the sky. One of them fell, making a long line of light. "Someone is going to heaven," thought the little girl. Her old grandmother, the only person who had ever loved her, once told her that.
She struck another match, and in the light stood her grandmother, bright and gentle and kind. "Grandmother!" cried the girl. "Please take me with you! When the match goes out, you will go away, like the warm stove and the goose and the Christmas tree." And she quickly struck all the rest of the matches, because she wanted to keep her grandmother there. The matches shone brighter than the day.
Grandmother took the little girl in her arms, and they flew up together in light and joy, high, high above, where there was no cold, no hunger and no fear.
In the cold morning, people found the little girl in the corner. She was quiet and still, with rosy cheeks and a smile on her face. Around her lay the burnt matches. "She wanted to warm herself," people said sadly. No one knew the beautiful things she had seen, or how happily she had gone with her grandmother into the New Year.
