A girl went to the fair to look for work. She wanted to be a maid in a nice house. At last a funny old gentleman came to her. "I need a girl to work in my house," he said. "Will you come?" The girl said yes, and she went home with him.
ある娘が、働き口をさがしに市へ出かけました。どこかのいいお屋敷で、お手伝いさんとして働きたいと思っていたのです。やがて、ちょっと変わったおじいさんが近づいてきました。「うちで働いてくれる娘をさがしているんだが」とおじいさんは言いました。「来てくれるかね？」娘は「はい」と答えて、おじいさんと一緒に家へ行きました。
When they got to his house, the old gentleman said, "In my house, I use my own special names for things. You must learn them all." Then he started to teach her.
家に着くと、おじいさんは言いました。「わしの家では、物をわし独自の名前で呼ぶことにしておる。それを全部覚えてもらわねばならん」そして、娘に教えはじめました。
"What will you call me?" he asked. "Master, or Mister, sir," said the girl. "No," he said. "You must call me Master of All Masters."
「わしのことは、なんと呼ぶかね？」とおじいさんは尋ねました。「ご主人さま、それとも、だんなさまでしょうか」と娘は答えました。「いや、ちがう」とおじいさんは言いました。「だんなの中のだんな、と呼びなさい」
Then he pointed at his bed. "And what will you call this?" "A bed, sir." "No, that is my barnacle."
次に、おじいさんはベッドを指さしました。「では、これはなんと呼ぶ？」「ベッドでございます」「いや、これはわしのバーナクルだ」
He pointed at his trousers. "What do you call these?" "Trousers, sir." "No, you must call them squibs and crackers."
おじいさんはズボンを指さしました。「これはなんと呼ぶ？」「ズボンでございます」「いや、スクイブズ・アンド・クラッカーズと呼びなさい」
"And what do you call her?" he asked. He was pointing at the cat. "Cat or kitty, sir." "No, you must call her white-faced simminy."
「では、あれはなんと呼ぶ？」とおじいさんは尋ねました。指さしていたのは猫でした。「猫か、猫ちゃんでございます」「いや、ホワイトフェイス・シミニーと呼びなさい」
"And this?" He pointed at the fire. "Fire, sir." "No, you must call it hot cockalorum." "And what is this?" He showed her some water. "Water, sir." "No, its name is pondalorum."
「それから、これは？」おじいさんは暖炉の火を指さしました。「火でございます」「いや、ホット・コッカロラムと呼びなさい」「では、これはなんだね？」おじいさんは水を見せました。「水でございます」「いや、これの名前はポンダロラムだ」
Last of all, he pointed around him at the house. "What do you call this?" "A house, sir." "No, you must call it high topper mountain."
最後に、おじいさんは家の中をぐるりと指さしました。「これはなんと呼ぶ？」「家でございます」「いや、ハイ・トッパー・マウンテンと呼びなさい」
The girl said all the new words again and again, because she did not want to forget them. Barnacle, squibs and crackers, white-faced simminy, hot cockalorum, pondalorum, high topper mountain. Then they went to bed.
娘は、新しいことばを何度も何度もくり返しました。忘れたくなかったからです。バーナクル、スクイブズ・アンド・クラッカーズ、ホワイトフェイス・シミニー、ホット・コッカロラム、ポンダロラム、ハイ・トッパー・マウンテン。それから二人は床につきました。
In the middle of the night, the girl woke up. She smelled smoke. A spark from the fire was on the cat's tail, and the cat was running around and around the room. Soon the house itself began to catch fire!
真夜中、娘は目をさましました。煙のにおいがします。暖炉の火の粉が猫のしっぽについて、猫が部屋の中をぐるぐる走りまわっていたのです。そのうち、家そのものにも火がつきはじめました！
She ran to her master's door and shouted, "Master of All Masters, get out of your barnacle and put on your squibs and crackers! White-faced simminy has a spark of hot cockalorum on her tail! Unless you get some pondalorum, high topper mountain will be all on hot cockalorum!"
娘はご主人の部屋の戸口へ走っていって、叫びました。「だんなの中のだんなさま、バーナクルから出て、スクイブズ・アンド・クラッカーズをおはきください！ ホワイトフェイス・シミニーのしっぽに、ホット・コッカロラムの火の粉がついています！ ポンダロラムを持ってこないと、ハイ・トッパー・マウンテンがすっかりホット・コッカロラムになってしまいます！」
Then she took a deep breath and said, "That's all."
それから娘は、大きく息を吸って言いました。「以上でございます」
