Long ago, in the days of King Arthur, there lived a great magician called Merlin. One day, he put on the clothes of a poor old man. Then he stopped at a farmer's little house and asked for some food.
The farmer and his wife were kind. They gave him milk and brown bread. But Merlin saw that they looked very sad. "Why are you so unhappy?" he asked. "Because we have no children," said the wife, and she began to cry. "If I had a son, I would be the happiest woman in the world. I wouldn't mind if he was only as big as my husband's thumb."
Merlin smiled and decided to make her wish come true. Not long after, the farmer's wife had a baby boy. And he really was no bigger than his father's thumb.
The Queen of the Fairies came in through the window to see the baby. She kissed him and named him Tom Thumb. Then the fairies made clothes for him. They made his hat from an oak leaf, his shirt from a spider's web, and his shoes from mouse skin.
Tom never grew any bigger, but he was very clever and full of tricks. One day his mother was making a pudding in a big bowl. Tom wanted to see how she made it, so he climbed up to the edge of the bowl. But his foot slipped, and he fell right into the pudding! His mother didn't see him, and she put the pudding into a pot to cook.
Tom kicked and kicked. The pudding jumped around so much that his mother was frightened. "This pudding is magic!" she cried, and she threw it out of the door. A tinker was walking by. He picked up the pudding and put it in his bag. Then Tom shouted, "Let me out!" The tinker was so surprised that he dropped the pudding and ran away. Tom climbed out and walked home.
Another day his mother went to milk the cow, and she took Tom with her. The wind was strong, so she tied him to a flower with a thread. But the cow liked Tom's oak-leaf hat, and she ate Tom and the flower in one bite! "Mother, mother!" shouted Tom. "Where are you, Tommy?" "Here, Mother, in the red cow's mouth!" The cow didn't like the noise in her mouth, so she opened it, and Tom fell out. His mother caught him in her apron.
One day, when Tom was in the field with his father, a big black raven picked him up and flew far away over the sea. Then it dropped him, and a big fish swallowed him! A fisherman caught the fish and sold it to King Arthur's cook. When the cook opened the fish, out jumped Tom!
Everyone was surprised. They took him to King Arthur, who liked him very much. Tom did funny tricks and made everyone laugh. When it rained, he slept in the king's pocket.
One day the king asked about Tom's parents. "They are kind," said Tom, "but they are poor." So the king said, "Take as much money as you can carry home to them." Tom took one silver coin. It was very heavy for him! He carried it on his back for two days. His mother and father were very happy to see him.
When Tom came back, the king made him a knight. He gave Tom a needle for a sword and a little gray mouse for a horse.
Tom was a brave little knight. One day a big spider came at him, and Tom fought it with his needle. He fought well, but the spider was too strong for him. King Arthur and all his knights were very sad. They made a beautiful white stone for Tom with these words on it: "Here lies Tom Thumb, King Arthur's knight."
