Two princes left home to look for adventure. But they began to live a wild, careless life, and they never came home again. Their youngest brother was called Simpleton. He went out to look for them.
When at last he found them, they laughed at him. "We are much cleverer than you, and we can't get on in the world," they said. "How can a simple boy like you do any better?" But the three brothers went on together.
Soon they came to an anthill. The two older brothers wanted to kick it, just to watch the little ants run around in fear. But Simpleton said, "Leave the little animals alone. I won't let you hurt them."
Then they came to a lake, where many ducks were swimming. The two brothers wanted to catch a few and cook them for dinner. But Simpleton said, "Leave the little animals alone. I won't let you kill them."
Next they found a bees' nest in a tree. It was full of honey. The two brothers wanted to make a fire under the tree to drive the bees away and take the honey. But Simpleton said again, "Leave the little animals alone. I won't let you burn them."
At last the brothers came to a castle. In the stables there were horses made of stone, and there were no people anywhere. At the end of a long hall, they found a door with three locks. Through a small window in the door, they saw a little gray man sitting at a table.
They called to him once, twice, but he did not hear. When they called the third time, he got up and opened the door. He didn't say a word, but he gave them a fine dinner and showed each of them to a bedroom.
The next morning, the little gray man took the oldest brother to a stone table. Three tasks were written on it. If someone could do them, the castle would be free from its spell. The first task was this: "In the forest, under the moss, lie the princess's pearls. There are a thousand. Find them all before the sun goes down, or you will be turned to stone."
The oldest brother looked all day but found only a hundred pearls, so he was turned to stone. The next day the second brother found only two hundred, and he was turned to stone too.
Then it was Simpleton's turn. He looked and looked in the moss, but it was very hard. He sat down on a rock and began to cry. Just then the king of the ants came with five thousand ants. They were the ants he had saved! Soon they found all the pearls and put them in a pile.
The second task was to bring the key to the princess's bedroom out of the lake. At the lake, the ducks swam up to him. They dived down and brought up the key.
The third task was the hardest. The king had three daughters, and they were all asleep. Simpleton had to find the youngest one. But they looked exactly the same. The only difference was this: before they fell asleep, the oldest had eaten some sugar, the second some syrup, and the youngest a spoonful of honey.
Then a queen bee came flying in. She was the queen of the bees he had saved. She touched the lips of all three princesses, and at last she stayed on the lips of the one who had eaten honey. So Simpleton knew that she was the youngest.
At that moment the spell was broken. Everyone in the castle woke up, and the people who had been turned to stone became human again. Simpleton married the youngest princess, and later he became king. His two brothers married the other two sisters.
