I was born in a pleasant meadow with a pond of clear water. My mother, Duchess, was a good and wise horse. "You come from a good family," she told me. "Do your work with a good will, lift your feet up well when you trot, and never bite or kick." I have never forgotten her words.
My coat was black and shining, and I had one white foot and a pretty white star on my forehead. When I was four, I was sold to Squire Gordon of Birtwick Park. His wife looked at me and said, "He is really quite a beauty. Let's call him Black Beauty."
At Birtwick, the groom was John Manly, the kindest man I ever knew. I shared the stable with a fat little pony named Merrylegs and a tall chestnut mare named Ginger. At first Ginger bit and snapped. "Nobody was ever kind to me," she said. "Men whipped me and pulled my mouth hard. Why should I trust them?" But at Birtwick everyone was gentle, and slowly Ginger became calm.
One stormy evening, John and my master were driving me home. We came to a wooden bridge over a river. The water was high, and it was almost dark. The moment my feet touched the bridge, I knew something was wrong. I stopped and would not go on. Just then a man ran out with a light. "Stop!" he shouted. "The bridge is broken in the middle!" If I had gone on, we would all have fallen into the river.
Another night, John woke me. "Wake up, Beauty," he said. "Your mistress is very ill. We must ride for the doctor." I galloped eight miles to the town as fast as I could. Then the doctor rode me home. When we arrived, I was wet with sweat and shaking. Young Joe Green, the stable boy, did not know what to do. He gave me cold water to drink and no warm blanket. That night I became very ill. John nursed me for many days, and at last I got better. My mistress's life was saved too.
But my mistress never grew strong. The doctor said she must go to a warmer country, so my master sold his horses and left England. It was the saddest day of my life. Ginger and I were sold to a rich lord.
At our new home, the lady wanted our heads held high because it was fashionable. So the grooms used a cruel strap called a bearing rein. It pulled our heads up, and our necks hurt terribly. Ginger fought against it and kicked. I did my work, but every day was painful.
Later, a groom named Reuben Smith rode me one night when he was drunk. He did not notice that I had lost a shoe. Sharp stones cut my foot, and I fell on the road and broke my knees. After that, my knees had ugly scars, and no fine family wanted me. I was sold again and again.
At last I came to London, and a cab driver named Jerry Barker bought me. He was poor, but he was kind and honest, and his children loved me. Those were good years. One day I saw a thin, tired chestnut horse at a cab stand. It was Ginger. "Life is very hard," she said. "I wish I could die." Not long after, a cart passed with a dead chestnut horse in it. I believe it was Ginger. I hoped her troubles were over.
When Jerry became ill, I was sold to a hard master. His horses worked from morning until night. One hot day, I was pulling a heavy load up a hill. My strength was gone. I fell to the ground, and I thought I was going to die.
But I lived. A kind farmer bought me and gave me rest and good food. Then he sold me to three ladies in the country. Their young groom came to look at me. He saw the white star on my forehead and my one white foot. "It's Black Beauty!" he cried. "Beauty, do you know me? I'm little Joe Green!"
Joe had grown into a fine young man, and he cared for me with great love. Now I live in a quiet green place, and my troubles are over. Sometimes, before I am quite awake, I think I am still in the orchard at Birtwick, standing with my old friends under the apple trees.
