Every year, Green Hill School has a riddle contest. This year, the last two players were Emma and Leo. Emma was quiet and careful. Leo was fast, loud and very funny. The whole school was watching.
Ms. Park held up a small wooden box. "There are five riddles in this box," she said. "Write your answers on your paper. Don't say them out loud!"
She took out the first card. "What can fill a whole room, but it takes up no space?" Emma looked up at the lights on the ceiling and wrote something. Leo looked at his friends and smiled. He wrote very fast.
"Riddle two. You throw me out when you want to use me. You take me in when you don't want to use me. What am I?" Emma thought about ships. Leo thought about his lunch.
"Riddle three. What has thirteen hearts, but no other body parts?" Emma thought about a game she often played with her grandmother. Leo put his hand on his heart and looked very serious.
"Riddle four. What is easy to get into, but hard to get out of?" Everyone looked at Leo. Leo got into trouble almost every week. He laughed and wrote one word.
"Last riddle. What has a head and a tail, but no body?" Emma put her hand into her pocket. Leo looked at the school cat, who was sleeping by the door.
Ms. Park read the papers. Emma had five correct answers. Leo had only one. His answer to riddle one was "the smell of my lunch," and everyone laughed for a full minute. "Emma wins the trophy," said Ms. Park with a smile. "And Leo wins the prize for the funniest answers."

A ship throws its anchor into the water when it wants to stop, and takes it back in before it goes. A deck of cards has thirteen hearts, but hearts on cards are only shapes. And a coin has a head on one side and a tail on the other. In English, the two sides of a coin are called heads and tails.
そしてコインには、片面に head(頭=表)、もう片面に tail(しっぽ=裏)があります。
