The Tanaka family bought a new robot. His name was Robo. Robo could cook, clean and wash the dishes. He was very smart, but he had one problem. He understood every word exactly as it was.
田中さん一家は、新しいロボットを買いました。名前はロボ。ロボは料理も、そうじも、お皿洗いもできました。とても頭がよいのですが、ひとつだけ困ったところがありました。どんな言葉も、文字どおりに受け取ってしまうのです。
On his first morning, Mrs. Tanaka was carrying a big box. "Robo, can you give me a hand?" she asked. Robo nodded. He took off his left hand and gave it to her. "Here you are," he said kindly. Mrs. Tanaka looked at the metal hand. "Thank you," she said slowly. "But I meant, please help me."
最初の朝、田中さんの奥さんが大きな箱を運んでいました。「ロボ、手を貸してくれる?」と、奥さんは頼みました。ロボはうなずくと、自分の左手をはずして、奥さんに渡しました。「どうぞ」と、ロボは親切に言いました。奥さんは金属の手を見つめました。「ありがとう」と、奥さんはゆっくり言いました。「でもね、手伝ってちょうだい、という意味だったのよ」
In the afternoon, Mr. Tanaka had to go out. "Robo, please keep an eye on the baby," he said. Robo took out one of his eyes and put it on the baby's bed. The baby laughed and played with it happily. When Mr. Tanaka came home, he had to explain that "keep an eye on" means "watch carefully."
午後、田中さんのだんなさんが出かけなければならなくなりました。「ロボ、赤ちゃんに目をひとつ置いといてくれ(keep an eye on the baby)」と、だんなさんは言いました。ロボは自分の目をひとつ取り出して、赤ちゃんのベッドに置きました。赤ちゃんは笑って、うれしそうにそれで遊びました。家に帰ってきただんなさんは、「keep an eye on」は「よく見ておく」という意味なのだと、説明しなければなりませんでした。
At dinner, Ken, the older son, ate his cake in ten seconds. "That math test was a piece of cake," he told his parents. Robo looked at the empty plate. Then he looked at Ken. "Did you eat your test?" he asked. "No," laughed Ken. "It means the test was very easy."
晩ごはんのとき、長男のケンはケーキを十秒で食べてしまいました。「きょうの数学のテスト、ケーキひと切れ(a piece of cake)だったよ」と、ケンは両親に言いました。ロボは空っぽのお皿を見ました。それから、ケンを見ました。「テストを食べたのですか?」と、ロボはたずねました。「ちがうよ」と、ケンは笑いました。「テストがすごくかんたんだったって意味さ」
Robo saved all the new phrases in his memory. He really wanted to learn. Before bed, he said, "I am sorry about today. I think I am not a good robot."
ロボは、新しい言い回しをぜんぶ記憶装置に保存しました。本当に覚えたかったのです。寝る前に、ロボは言いました。「きょうはすみませんでした。わたしは、よいロボットではないようです」
"Don't worry, Robo," said Mrs. Tanaka. "Everyone makes mistakes when they learn a language. We can help you. Now, it's late. Let's hit the hay."
「気にしないで、ロボ」と、奥さんは言いました。「言葉を学ぶときは、だれだってまちがえるものよ。わたしたちが手伝うわ。さあ、もう遅いわね。干し草をたたきに行きましょう(hit the hay)」
Robo walked out to the garden and started looking for some hay to hit. The whole family ran after him. It was going to be a long night.
ロボは庭に出ていって、たたく干し草をさがしはじめました。家族みんなが、ロボを追いかけました。長い夜になりそうでした。
These are all English idioms. "Give me a hand" means help me. "Keep an eye on" means watch carefully. "A piece of cake" means very easy. And "hit the hay" means go to bed, because long ago, people slept on beds made of hay.
これはどれも、英語の慣用句です。「give me a hand」は、手伝って。「keep an eye on」は、よく見ておく。「a piece of cake」は、とてもかんたん。そして「hit the hay」は、寝るという意味です。むかしの人は、干し草で作ったベッドで眠っていたからです。
